k coolio.
talked to a bmw mechanic today, i told him exactly whats going on and he said instantly with no hestitation that its my ecu. he says it is the only thing from stopping the injectors from opening and aloowingthe fuel to go through.
he says ive been looking in the wrong place. is he right? how much am i looking for a new ecu etc...

The only thing that opens the injectors is fuel pressure, and is CONTINUOUS injection.

well he a s[ecialists in e30s
but he said that regardless of what car its always the ECU that controls the openeing of injectors. ...
talking about fuel pressure... i got my mate to squeeze the inlet pipe from the fuel filter to the metering unit and the car started to rumble when he did that...
but it only happened that once... does that help anthing..

if pressure is the issue, it needs to be measure to know what the situation is.
Tell your BMW mech, that he's wrong, as mfi is a 'mechanial fuel injection' as Safe chav has already said.

during crank was about 9ish
battery was at 12v
and at crank was 10ish...
guessing thats enough for the pump to work?? or should i replace it?

well towed it to local garage, a guy who works there has built many rst so he knows whats going on.
found that alternator was put on the wrong way as was the belt, and a coupla wires were out, but nothing related to fuel.
they are going to sort out the timing, which they said will take a good 4 hours, and then look at the fueling... because its all related aparetnly. dont really see how timing the car will get fuel through to the injectors, but dont have much choice now.
so will keep all posted! thanks for the help!
anyone know how i can go about sueing/getting money back from the previous mechanics... this garage said they will write everything out that is wrong and back me up... but what would i do..?

Keep going to poor rip off garages and your car will never be as good as it could be, and cost you alot more.
and you would not be able to do it in 4 hours, as havent got the knowledge or equipment.

Can you just find out for me how exactly you fit an alternator on a CVH the wrong way.
And on that note im even more interested to know the justification behind telling you the BELT was fitted the wrong way?!?!?!
And as said........4 hours to time it up?!
How much did that little lot set you back?

i'm not being funny Hav,
But people keep feeding you b-llsh-t, and as you dont know any better, you believe them.
if you brought the car to me as i said, i could of gave you a honest stat of play of the engine that was built for you. As i dont believe in slating people if they done a honest job, as its their Lively hood.
But 3 hours is long enough to remove, check, and refit, re time the cam, and set the static timin.

im goin to go down and find out if it was all fitted the wrong way... you are 1000000000000000000000% sure it cant be.. with the belt because then ill take it further with them.

also theyr not going to charge me if they dont get the car started... so they can mess around with anything they want as long as they sort out the fuelling problem... thats what im paying them for.
as for the alternator, if they try and 'fix it' and arnt successfull they cant charge me obioiusly!

You can only fit that alternator on that bracket one way mate! Well you could probably get it on another way (where theres a will theres a way) but you wouldnt be getting a belt on the pulley though!
And the belt isnt directional, its just a V groove belt?!

yea they said the V;s are the wrong way..
anyway, their not concentrating on that... theyr on the fueling so hopefully theyl crack it.
they sprayed some stuff down the intke (carb something.. think it replicates fuel) and the carwas backfiring majorly. does backfire mean that there is air in the system???

They said what taking the piss aint they!
If its backfiring that means the plugs are firing whilst the exhaust valves are open! - check the HT leads ore on in the right order

So have they tested the fuel pressure?
if its not running yet, and they dont know why, they aren't as clued up as they said.
What have they said the reason is?

they havnt tested the fuel pressure because they can see thers not enough pressure coming out...
they are still looking for the reason. i made it clear to them that theyr not charging me for investigation. so itl only when they find the problem that theyl charge for parts and fitting etc.
anything i should tell them 2 do?

THEY can see there's not enough pressure, But havent checked it. LOL,
Sorry, but we have told you what to do, and you keep asking.
i know what i would be looking at, and have told you so, but you dont want to do it, which is up to you. But i feel i've wasted my time.

if they can see fuel trickling out from the injector pipes i dont think they need to check the pressure. They checked it at the inlet pipe to the metering unit and said it was fine. Theyve taken the old metering unit apart to see whats going on.

You seem to forget, as we have said, MFI is CONTINUOUS injection and RELIES SOLELY on fuel pressure.
The injectors are sprung loaded and only open when the fuel pressure exceeds that of their springs...............
I myself, even if i came to the "assumption" the fuel pressure was ok i would still test it so i could be 101% sure and categorically rule that factor out.

As above, if fuel's the issue, always start at the beginning of the line. THE PUMP. And fuel pressure.
i would like to be able to tell the fuel pressure by just looking. but i cant, so i test the pressure.

checked out the car today. pump is fine. its the metering unit. even the 2nd one i got!!! they put mine back on and took the one i bought apart as it was in worse condition to mine. car starts now, but needs help. the flap on the m/u needs to be pushed down and throttle pushed at the same time to get it to rev up, which it does very nicely. wont idle though as as soon as flap ios left, it just cuts out!
ovbiously the first thing they are looking at is the m.u flap. it rumbles up and down when cranking. When cranking, and the accelerator floored, the flap does not move all the way down, onlyjust a tiny tiny tiny amount. soundslike theres a problem here.
any ideas.

Well the flap is never going to move all the way down is it?!
A engine being revved with no load will never require as much fuel as a floored engine pulling a whole car...........
If it won't idle it sounds like an air leak mate, its a classic!
A small air leak is enough to stop it idling but obviously at higher revs, where more air is required, a small air leak is less significant.

Safe Chav,
i said air leak to Hav before he posted this thread.
Hav, As said yesterday,
the metering unit come off a running car, so abit why its not working now.

and the only real way of testing it, is pressure test from the turbo inlet back wards.
This should of been top of the garage list to do 1st,
This could be down to you disconnecting the breather setup and not blanking the metering unit and pipes correctly as i said before..
