hi all
just piked me self up an 1988 orion 1.6i for a song, mint contd.
the only prob i have is ther is a tapping noise from the engine that varies with the speed, me m8s dad has said could be the tappets but there suppost to be self adjusting, ive stuck me ear under there and it sounds more like its comeing from inside the intake not under the rocker cover,
the other little nag is the engine doesnt like to idle now and again, sometimes shes fine, next min ill pull up the revs drop and she cuts out,
and help plz

The tapping is a fact of life with a CVH, you have 2 options - either buy a new cam AND lifters, or grin and bare it. Replacing just the lifters on there own WILL NOT cure the problem and is a waste of your money.
The idle problem is more than likely caused by an air leak, another common problem to MFI cars.

With your idle problem, remove the air trunking to the throttle body and clean the throttle butterfly and air bypass with carb cleaner this will probably help with your idle problem as they tend to get a bit of carbon build up in there and can cause idle issues especially when cold/warming up. As for the tappet noise SC hit it on the nose if you want to stop it you will have to renew the cam and tappets together.
