Help with electric sunroof
Hi guys, Newbee here so please forgive if in wrong forum
..
I have a ford granada/scorpio (old shape beleve it to be a MK3) 2.0l dohc. The problem i got is that i need to replace the sunroof which is an electric one.
I got myself a manual but it only shows how to remove the motor and not the sunroof itself..
I can identify that there is a clip of some sort that is stopping the sunroof working properly as it will move into the tilt position but only by abaout half inch and will not sit back in place properly.
It wont slide neither so what im wanting to do is remove and replace if necessary.
Well i guess thats it for now
So heres hopeing for a reply

If its the same as a saphire/sierra its abit fiddly
You have to change the whole lot on a saph too, different spline on the manual sunroof mech compared to the electric motor
The whole lot can be removed without removing the glass, you have to mess about sliding the sunroof in and out and removing the screws that are accessable with it open or shut
Hopefully for your sake the screws that hold the glass to the mech will not be rusted up,if I remember correctly there are 6 screws, you get to them by removing a small piece of plastic trim on the sides of sunroof.
Then the mech is held to the roof of the car by a load of self tappers which screw in from the outside
Good luck

Hi m8 thanks for the advise. But im still unsure what i can do as my sunroof is stuck in the closed position, the only screws i can get to is the small ones on the glass inside.
I will try and have a gander over the weekend and hopefully i will be able to sort sommat out.
Again thanks for the advise

hi,i had this problem on a sierra,i was converting it to electric from manual, what happens is the splined shaft wears and 1 of the wires(theres 2)jumps a couple of teeth which makes 1 side open before the other, once they are like that they are gubbed as theyre not serviceable,to remove your 1 pull the sunblind back, and look at the front of the sunroof from the inside, there are 3 screws, remove them, then pull the metal surround back out of the way, then look up at each side of the sunroof,in the darkness theres 3 screws that will need to come out,4 should be no probs but the 2 front ones will be rusted to bits, either get a twist socket which will bite and remove them if you are lucky or get rough with it as its probably fxxked anyway!
Is there any way of telling if a sunroof works by lookin at it? The reason i ask is that there is one at my local scrappy but he seldom has the keys for his cars (so he says, i just rekon he cant be bothered to look)
Well i just wanna say thanks again guys you are a great help.

yeah, undo the cowling, cut the wires going to the sunroof motor from the car, there will be a bunch of them going to the interior light and the motor, get the plug off of the light ,figure out whats pos and neg, twist the sunroof wires, think blue is positive and stick them into the light plug,as long as the battery is connected it will work, unless its shagged like yours!good luck, lee

Hi 155Lee Just to say thanks yet again you been a great help along with koskev3 i think i now understand the sunroof thing.
There is a tool you mentioned in your earlier post "Twist socket" 2 things first what is this?, and second how will that help to get out the screws. (not bolts) as you proberbly allready know im finding it almost imposible to remove these screws using a mere scredriver
Im finding all 6 are very very tight.
And im taking it that once the glass is out then there will be access to bolts holding in the mech?

(will tilt but not slide) I soaked the screws for the glass in wd40 this morning, come out this afternoon and decided to try and see if it will open and it did (tilt only)
so looks like i saved myself a few bob in a replacement.
But wanna say thanks for all your help guys

a twist socket(think thats what they are called)is a socket with spiralled teeth in it,if you have a rounded off nut,pan head screw, allen key bolt etc this socket goes over the top of it and the spirralled teeth bite in to the screw and hopefully remove it,most garages have them, very handy things, and once the glass is out you will get to all the screws, when you get your sunroof out it will probably fall to bits and look like spaghetti, dont worry about that, but be very very careful with the replacement sunroof,if you need to go down that road of course!
Hi lee
I have managed to put in enough wd40 to stop a ship from gettin wet
inside the sunroof workings and have now managed to get it to tilt.
I have invested in some industrial strength grease (bargain from e-bay)
to try and lube up where the metal wind deflector is once it is all the way open...And what im hopeing is that it will then slide as well..
Will keep you posted.
If this works do ya think it might be a good idea to post some pics so i can show where i lubed just in case someone else has the same prob????

probably would be,but the wires that make it slide are in alloy tubes which wont let grease in,if its tilting its halfway there, when you are winding it down push the rear of the glass down as it might be catching on the roof stopping it from sliding.lee
Hi lee how you doing?
Right been at it again today and it's almost there...
You were right if i push down at the rear of the glass it will slide back, unfortunatly i have to give it a hand ie: push the glass from the pasenger side (front) to help it along a little.
Then when closing it it will get to the wind deflector and stops so again i have to open/close/open on the sunroof switch.
It seems to snag on the way back almost as if something is getting stuck.
Im thinking that i just keep lubing it and operating it on a daily basis (weather permiting) and hopefuly things will start to get easier.
Now i dont wanna sound like a cheap skate but at the moment i cant afford to get a new/second hand sunroof so i have gotta just keep goin with this method for now.
I did notice sommat that i dont understand and that is about halfway down each rail there is a small block with some sort of markers on em could you tell me what these are and could they affect the sunroof???
