Default Fitting a turbo to 1600 CVH

Can someone help me please. I am thinking about fitting a turbo to my 1983 MK3 Escort. It's got a standard 1600 CVH with carburetor at the minute. I'm not looking for huge power gains, just enough to get a bit more fun out of the old bird. What parts will I need, and what prices am I looking at?

depends what you want from it,ie what power hikes.
part wise you will need;
rs turbo exhaust manifold
turbo unit
downpipe and full exhaust
intercooler
pipe work
carb box to connect boost pipe to that bolts on carb if its got a twin choke weber like 32/34 then may have a delta hf carb box
sump removed and oil return drilled and welded on or rs turbo sump
a way of getting oil feed to the turbo like sandwhich plate or take off from oil pressure switch
depending what turbo you get if its a s2 87 on you will need to make up a coolant system from turbo just pipe in say from stat housing and a return but s1 rst ie b to c and a few d plates turbos didnt have water cooling were air cooled so is an easier fit
may also need an rst radiator as i think its a bit smaller cos the intercooler sits next to it.
think thats it it will prob be ok to about 5 psi,any more and you will need a headgasket spacer or maybe 2 headgaskets then should be ok to about 12-14psi BUT you will need to sort fuelling for this as it will run lean and melt a piston otherwise.
hope this helps.

thanks for the help. It'l be a long term project so i've now got an idea of what to look out for. I'll just pick up the parts as and when I see them. Am I right that the original turbo on S1 is a Garrett T3?

The compression of the carb motor could be the stumbling block. I'd whip the pistons out and get them machined flat first then just use RS Turbo stuff to convert it. The only thing you will need to do with the rest of the engine is weld an oil return into the sump. If you have a lean burn head (heart shaped combustion chamber), you might have to get an XR3i head (round combustion chamber).

DazC, all the earlier engines should be hemi, changed to lean burn later on during the mk4's production, but you probably already know this anyway
