Default SERIES 1 - misfire

il start from the begining,i bought the car a few months back with the head off, the gasket had gone. so i had all new gaskets inc a HEAD SKIM. new PLUGS, LEADS, ROTOR ARM, CAP.
started fine but was smoking alot. took it up the road and it cleared but under load it cut out and back fired. ive lived with it ever since. ive since also replaced- b-r-b ecu for a chipped b-r-w ecu, fuel pump relay (brand new ford) i also checked the timing.
i eventually took it to engine advantages in witham to be rolling roaded, told me it was breathing heavy and loosing power through cylinders 1 and 4 (cyl leakage test) afterwards he roadtested it and said it was almost definately the distributor itself. so yesterday i fitted 1 i got off ebay(40 quid 1) and set the timing again. and it still bloody does it. it will either just jerk or jerk and backfire, also when it does this the rev counter drops.
i wondered if any1 had an idea, i know it dont help the plugs are getting oiled up but why would the rev counter drop? bit tiresome i know but any help appreciated.

The rev counter dropping shows the misfire is being caused by ignition cut.

Could be the boost limiter, if not you must have a damaged wire somewhere thats shorting out and cutting the ignition momentarily, as long as your sure the new dizzy isn't faulty.

The limiter is integrated into the ecu yea.

Does it backfire at any specific boost level? And does it do it in any gear?

2nd gear upwards. on the spot its fine. mainly when at high boost, but also when im driving casually poodaling when slightly under load, ie slow up to go round a car and pull out in second. it cuts out at both scenarios but only backfires at high boost obviosly when theres more fuel. are coils renound for playing up, or anything to do with a faulty cold start valve- that dont work 2.

Soounds like the boost limiter to me mate! What boost is it running?

Coils aren't that common, dizzy's are, fuckin awful things on RST's!

Cold start valves are shit too, they do jack shit and most of them are better without anyway.

10psi with a bleed valve- had it set to that at rollin rd to slow down my oil comsumption! trouble is it dont always do it. i could drive 40 miles and it might do it once, and then fri night i took it 4 a caning and it done it all night. its not really at max boost, more when im on over run in 4th or 5th then just lightly go back on the throttle, or when i could of selected a lower gear but havnt cos i dont want to thrash it, if you no wat i mean????

If your certain its not boost cut you will have to try replacing parts, and looking for damaged wires etc

It will work regardless, but 10 psi is on the limit for a standard ecu, boost cut will cause the same symptoms you are experiencing.

no i know that sort of cut out, my old 1 done it when i tried winding the boost up.so i went back to the amal valve. i then got another ecu (CHIPPED)and it still done the misfire im talking about. i then went back to the bleed valve and ive had it at 12 psi, no cut outs at max boost which sugests the ecu i bought IS chipped. when a limiter is faulty will it cut out at any time, at any boost?[/i]

check your plug gaps too as these can cause a miss fire under boost

Well anything could be faulty but it would be VERY rare for 2 ecu's to have the same fault. I personally then think you have a faulty dizzy and/or wiring fault somewhere.

Good suggestion but its an ignition cut, the rev counter is dropping to 0 which is the dead giveaway in this instance

Default fault

thats what im thinking. it has definately got WORSE since fitting the 'NEW' distributor i got off ebay. it was the bloke who had a job lot of them. looks the part but im not 2 sure. ive emailed some 1 else who bought 1 off him see how his was. still no reply. or it could be a case of where ive disturbed the wires? il try my mates dizzy 2moro.
was it wise to have the head re-faced, buing a turbo? or could my injectors be partially blocked what with all the oil being put through?

Thought you said it did drop to 0

Even if its momentarily, ignition cut will make the needle very eratic in its operation.
