Buying a reco engine from breakers
Hello guys.
im looking at buying an engine for my 3 door, The engine in it is getting a bit sad and I'm in Aussy so there is not a lot to choose from here. Any way I see there are breakers selling reconditioned engines has anyone bought one or know if there a good build etc , they seem to go for 6000 - 9000 depending on spec ?
Thanks

Probably better contacting one of the cossie specialists and see what options they give you, I’d not want to pay 9k for an engine that’s came from a breakers imo

PassionFord Post Whore!!
The well known Cosworth breakers do quite often have good engines for sale with a comprehensive list of what has been done to them.Different situation from buying something from a general car breaker who may have got his hands on a RS Cosworth and would have an engine for sale with no knowledge of what its like.

Whilst Im sure that RS breakers or Oppliger would supply you with a decent unit its going to cost you a lot of money to get an engine shipped to Aus, with the added worry of it getting to you undamaged, there is a Cosworth and RS following over in Aus, is there no specialists over there who could rebuild your engine for you?

Trust a breakers ?
with an engine ? Not a fucking chance, especially at those prices !!
I cannot believe that there isnt anything a good machine shop in Oz couldnt do to restore your own engine to good health.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
as above. you can order any specialist bits on line and get them delivered if the engine builder cannot source them in Aus
I's stick with the engine you know and get it professionally rebuilt, you'll get a much better result for not much more money

Why not contact Mark, SCS, Oppliger or any of the trusted builders to see what they can source for you and send out, if buying an engine from abroad really is the last resort ?
At least that way you're buying from a known trusted source.
But breakers break cars....I don't think I've ever seen any who actually re-condition engines. Many might claim to sell recon engines, but often it's more like a "recon" engine pulled from a car, power washed and some paint thrown over it without actually doing any engine work at all.
There are countless threads on forums of such vendors offering supply/fit, warranties etc etc and many many turn into a total nightmare with them supplying dodgy engines.
Of course every single one will not be like that, but there is huge risk involved....and that's just buying locally ! From Oz where you'd really have no backup or guarantees....not a chance would I take that risk.

ok guys thanks for the input, I was just looking at options, as cosworth engines here are starting to get a bit scarce, just be nice to have an extra, a bloke on here has said he has one for sale so might look into that too. Thanks

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
My original engine sat in a corner of the garage for 19 years seized solid before I got round to having it rebuilt.
#3 piston had to be beaten out with a hammer as it was seized so badly.
It's as right as rain now, so just goes to show there's no need to give up on it just cos it's getting a bit tired

thanks guys , it great to hear all your feedback, my main reason for hunting down a second engine was manly to have a good strong well spected engine with good HP and keep the original engine standard.just been missing out on engines here because they sell fast , and was looking at different options .
On another matter I have a strange number stamped on my block , I was told when I purchased the car the engine had been cooked and the block and head were replaced, on the raised rectangle below the turbo is a number CLBNHC and looks like 45. I5 or something, looks like it's been stamped by a child .
any ideas, there are no numbers on the front of the block under the thermostat. ??

Here's a couple of pics to compare against from mine. The block looks like it could be genuine just by looking at the moulding above the flat space for the engine number, but that certainly ain't a genuine engine number. The second one's a shot of the stamping on the head
