Best towing car for under a grand
Hi,
What would you say the best towing car would be for up to 1k?
A friend of mine wants to know as he has a little speed boat (about 15ft) so would probably have to be a 4x4 as it would have to go up and down steep slope thingys and beaches.
I'm thinking Land Rover discovery, Ford Explorer or even a quattro Audi.
Any suggestions?

I used to have a 2.5 lwb shogun and it was great for towing at 50 - 60 mph but was guttless for normal driving didn't have any top speed it was reving flat out at 80mph and was so noisey aswell plus the bottom end went in the end still got it sitting in my garage if he wants a project.
Got a range rover p38 at the min fantastic 4x4 in every way can't beat it but won't get one under a grand after that i'd go for a discovery 300 tdi but don't even think you can get a good one of them for under a grand.

dont let him buy a 1.6 foretrack there rubbish! and dont let him buy an auto either as when he wants to reverse ith any weight it wont do it, you can find cheap P38's for under a grand if you know were to look!
i have a 200TDi with 33" mud tyres for a grand if hes interested, its a complete mint motor with no rust at all pm me if hes interested

i've got a really clean 300 v8 for well under a grand, yes it's an auto and is a bit thirsty but towing with it is no problem. had a 30 foot twin axle trailer on last week over a muddy field, bit of wheel spin but put it in low ratio and off we went no worries!

range rover classic does the job perfectly .
i used my old classic rangy to launch my 25 foot binliner and never strugled. we tried my mates shogun sport and the thing wouldnt have it.
and when your not towing with it , you can go offroading .

under a grand? hum u may get a 200 tdi discovery. or even a late defender 300tdi.
will be best for the job, also it has the largest towing capacity of 3.5 ton.
some cars may not be legal to tow what u have in mind!?
also make sure ur mate passed his driving test before 1997, or he legally cant tow anything over 750 kg!!!

Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) or a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.

my suggestion is; sierra xr4x4, with centre and rear lsd's they're not too bad on the slippery stuff.

NO YOU CAN'T - read your own link again! New drivers, passing their test after 1997, do not have B+E entitlement, and therefore can not tow cars / boats or trailers weighing over 750kgs

No it's correct.
a vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.25 tonnes could be driven by the holder of a category B entitlement. This is because the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle
the same vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes when coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.5 tonnes would fall within category B+E. I'm surprised by that, as some 17year old numb nut can now go out, pass a basic car test, then drag a 21 ft caravan behind a Toyota pick up provided the whole lot doesn't weigh more than 3.5 tonnes basically....

Early import Hilux surfs are starting to come around a grand? Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees are very reasonable money at the moment.
LWB Nissan Terrano's [or ford maverick if you can find one] with the 2.7 TDi/Taxi Engine in will do the trick
If you can get a P38 Rangie for that money, don't bother, it'll cost you a fortune, as will most Landies at that price.
I will give you a good profit on every late defender 300 tdi you can get hold of for under a grand![roadworthy with some MOT at least] Call me on 07947 570599, I've always got the cash waiting

We towed for 'years' with a saab 900i. It was my parents and used for family holidays with van, 2 kids, 1 dog, 4 bikes, 3 canoes etc.
My brother kept it after and we used it for towing a 14ft boat - Never missed a beat. Only mods were saabs OE 'towing' springs.
Ugly as sin but easy big enough to sleep 2 in the boot with the seats down - as tried numerous times up in the lakes - two in the boot and one in the boat on a pay and display car park

the wankers why dont they word it properly, im gna call them and find out for deffinate!! as im a builder, i often use diggers and need to shift heavy stuff, and this is important to know!!!
So my landrover weighs in at 2.3 ton, and is plated to tow 3.5 ton (ps the only 4x4 that can legally pull 3.5
)

fuck me im confused? i havnt towed anything heavy for the last year since i was "told" the 750 rule. but reading that the way its worded it says;
