I used to have a 2.5 lwb shogun and it was great for towing at 50 - 60 mph but was guttless for normal driving didn't have any top speed it was reving flat out at 80mph and was so noisey aswell plus the bottom end went in the end still got it sitting in my garage if he wants a project.

Got a range rover p38 at the min fantastic 4x4 in every way can't beat it but won't get one under a grand after that i'd go for a discovery 300 tdi but don't even think you can get a good one of them for under a grand.
