I am in the process of fitting my Bailey breather kit but how the hell do you remove the kidney box coz it wont budge ?

Looking at other pics it looks like it just pulls out so maybe just brute force is needed ???????

Ive found that usually a combination of twisting is (to break the seal), rocking it back and forth as much as you can whilst also pulling it up.

If you can get the kidney twisted away from the block enough, you can tap the underside with a rubber mallet at the same time as pulling upwards on it.

It is only a push fit but probably has never been out before since fitting.........

 

i used a pry bar as mine was rock solid too....i took inlet manifold so it was easier to get too.

 

excuse my ignorance, but whats a kidney box ???

 

Its part of the breather system located under the inlet manifold.

Martin I have got all the inlet off at the minute........tbh ther car is looking a little sad as i'm having a little clean and i'm putting the rs500 cooler on too (amongst loads of other bits)
You can see how clean the drivers side inner wing is compared to the passanger side. The cam cover will be off soon also

 

otherwise known as the 'flame trap' its the breather section that is fitted to the side of the block and directs oil mist to the inlet plenum for reinduction (not really a good idea, but used for emissions).

Shaped like a 'Kidney' (sort of) its designed to allow the oil mist out but oil itself to flow back to the sump as the inlet and outlet are staggered hence the 'kidney' name.

 

Me too... it wouldnt come of with ordinary brute force and there is NO room for hand tools and get a good wiew to

 

if the manifold is off then just use a big screwdriver to put between the block and the kidney box,then lever it outwards,once the seal has broken you should be able to wriggle it to and fro till its loose and comes out if the manifold is on then its a bugger but you can knock them out from below again using a long screwy or chisel

 

gonna want to do this to mine!? v soon just bin all the old stuff then i take it!? i gonna want to plumb into the turbo side too is that asking too much by asking how hard that is!???

Wow mate looks like you've been busy and youre finally fitting the cooler too!!!! If you lived a bit closer id love to help you out with both jobs.....They were an arse but i just love doing this kind of stuff. Nice to see youre having a little clean too

Adamski: Its easy really....I rang round loads of well know tuners in the northwest and midlands area for quotes on fitting and they were all a lot of ££££ or booked up for weeks so i got the manual out and had a go. If you have the time, patience, and the right tools fitting the breather is easy.

I have a small turbo and so i havent gone into the rocker cover as after doing some research on the web it said that wasnt neccessary. I fitted a mirror image tank so i hope this is useful to you im not sure how different it is to fit the small round pot......On the turbo side underneath the manifold there is a threaded blank in the block that should just undo with a good socket. The narrowest port from the bottom of the mirror image tank goes from here to the threaded adaptor that you will get in the fitting kit.

There is a small pipe that goes into the sump on a 4X4 on the inlet side,pull this off and one of the ports (preferably the bottom one) from the tank connects onto this.

Once the flame trap is out of the block you need to fit the other pipe in the fitting kit into this hole for the remaining pipe to fit too.This should go onto the top port of the mirror tank.

The remaining pipe should be the widest one which just vents to atmosphere at the bottom of the car.

Hope this has helped......i searched on here a lot before i attempted mine as its widely discussed and theres some great information on fitting breather kits and pictures on here if youre willing to look.

i can do it no probs just curious how hard the turbo side can be

i have my breathers etc i just need to order some hose and quip fittings, and i also need to find myself the adaptors for the block or get them made....

does anyone know the size of the holes the adapters go into?? as i may get some adapters made with quip ends

He's doing my cam cover, thermostat housing, strut tops, bailey breather, lifting eyes, inlet manifold/plenum and the throttle cable bracket.

I got a full set of black Roose hoses and mikalor clamps to go on too.....i cant wait to get it all back together

I managed to get the kidney box out after with a fooking big crow bar and i butchered the kidney box for the pipe to go back in for the new breather .

FRANCO Christian told me my parts are done so i should have them early-mid next week

DO you have to remove the inlet when doing this?
Im thinking that I should remove mine as my breater still has it ( i think), but i have a horrbible feeling that if I remove the inlet, then rather than becoming a quick parts fitting exercise, it will become a full blown bloody rebuild etc... - not that any of you have gone down the same route, of course!
