Why are you posting photos of a 1980's Type BC box next to a Focus RS box I dont have either of them....

My box looks likes this.....

Name: st6speed1.jpg

Not a 30 year old box that shit's itself with 150hp

I know a few MTX Box's that have failed, I believe im maybe the lucky first who has broken a ST170 ( Getrag MT285 Gearbox )

I know that Stuart Meads with the mini is running 9's with a ST170 Turbo engine but he is running a GM hydromatic auto box from the states

They use the ST170 box in the Noble M400 with quaife internals

I think there are a few guys who have destroyed them in the big bhp cars (970bhp)

Do a search on the web for Noble Forums, you may find a solution there

All the serious UK drag FWD guys have problems with gearboxes breaking

The only proven option is an auto GM box or to try a tractive sequential which would be expensive if it let go (Ł12k)

Sounds like you might have reached the limit of the ST170 box

Speak with these guys

Exactly!.....

People use the Focus RS because its readily available and fairly easy to install however I have opted for a 6speed box as I want the best of everything the main purpose of this car is for the track BUT I do like to try my hand at a bit of everything…

Now with the new internals I have, its quick on track and strip and will pull a stonking top end when needed.
Also has taken the power for the last 6 months when used and engages as fast as a sequential box.

HOWEVER – it has broken!.. this is not down to the power ripping the box to death or the gears etc.

It broke because the car tramped so severely and more than likely the mounts were not sufficient OR in fact too rigid that they stayed intact, so ripped the casing.

16 runs on track near on one straight after the other and the 16th it failed… Here is a little video to show the tramp, check the bonnet out to see how much it was tramping and smashing the front end.

I would put my money on any box breaking.

Oh dear sorry to hear that!! Can you strap the casing at all? Once you've sorted the internals I suppose the pressures then on the casing, ive heard of a few people strapping casings!

Has it wiped the gear set out aswell?

Gutted to see the failure mate, we have all been there ay it's just endless spending!

Had to laugh at the video though,

"That's the gearbox gone!..................BOLLOX"

You could see in your eyes you were pricing it up in your head straight away

Been looking into causes further tonight.....

On the later Focus engines and boxes the sump pan actually bolts to the lower section of the box forming a brace/support. However, due to having dry sump pan this doesn't tie in at all with the box. This could have contributed to the break in the casing.

Looking at fitting a zetec sump back on (top half) and using a new dry sump set up which bolts onto this. The first kit should be ready next week all being well.

This will also be a huge help for anyone ith a zetec wanting to fit a zetec dry sump kit.

This will then see the lower section of the gearbox bolted upto sump pan which has extra bracing

Not having the original sump pan that ties into the block/box could have caused the break!.... or at least made it weaker.

Picking this up tonight and the dry sump pan will be re-modified with a new design a good friend is working on.

You defo need to go zetec stu mate, if you put the amount of effort into one of them as you have with your 1600 then you would be up there with snuggly bunny honey cockle luca!! but yours did sound the nuts when you were blipping up and down the car park, and your last event was epic!!!

Crazygage has pretty much knackered a few syncro's i think, or at least after 2 years of constant thrashing it became a lot slower to change gear, but thats all.

A couple of my mates have had there cars mapped their and were very happy with the service

Isn't he related to the guy who makes the Noble cars?

They do alot of development on the Noble supercars I believe which use the mondeo v6 engine and sT170 gearbox

I thought the main man who "was" there was related to the chap who makes the noble cars but i belive it was taken over a couple of years ago so not sure weather that bloke still is part of it.yes they do lots of developments on the engines.the lads seem really nice bunch only ever really spoken to them if there parked up outside are workshop if there going to collect some parts but know a few people who have used them and have been very happy

It is a Getrag 6 speed box but the casing is different to that of the st170/mini box and the selector shaft is on the other end of it for starters.
Getrag list ten 6 speed box gearboxes so this is why Im pretty confident it is not the st170 box they use.
