RS1600i - V8 Conversion
Thought id put a few pics of my Rs1600i V8 on going project on for you all to laugh at!!
Been going about 4 years, and is actually near to being finished. Havent got any recent pics, but needs a few finishing touches really.

These are the recipient, and its new engine. The car was very solid, but i dont like 4 cylinders, and i really dont like front wheel drive, sorry!! Out came the chisel, and goodbye went the floor and bulkheads etc.

I constructed a chassis/space frame by hand from 2"x"2 3mm wall box section steel. This mounts a cortina ifs, and a reliant scimitar rear axle.

The engine is a nos injected, 302 cuin ford from a mustang (5L in new money) and should hopefully make around 700bhp when finished. This is now through a manual flywheel and McLoed clutch, and at present a 3l 4 speed capri gearbox. This is all mounted well back, and should hopefully be good on the road and drag strip.

The car is a bit on hold, due to lack of money. I returned to school to become a teacher, so time is also at a premium at the moment too. If i ever actually finish it, it may be a bit on the heavy side, as i have ever so slightly over engineered it!!
The rear (boot) floor is all constructed now, and covers a transit mk1 fuel tank. The battery tray is in the boot, and a 15lb nitrous bottle!!
The scuttle needs some slight repair (dont they always!), the trans tunnel/backbone is in and plated up, and the floors just need to go in(flat aluminium).
The steering column, pedals and brake servo are all modified 2l capri parts. I have the proper RS interior to go in (minus back seat), but i may just sell it and buy a pair of light bucket seats. I need a boss to mount the rs steering wheel to the capri column, though i may have to fabricate something. In hindsight, chopping the mint dashboard up to put in the dustbin was probably a mistake! I think it may well have fitted with a little trimming here and there, never mind!
Im gonna run standard rims, but the rear tyres are 225x50x15, though i have made provision for 18" wide wheels at the rear for the drag strip.
Does anyone know what fibreglass panels are still available for mk3 escorts? and who sells them? I can get wings, and a bonnet, but would like a tailgate and doors if possible.
If you look at the photos you will see my four linked rear end (ooer!) all made by hand, with a template, home made jigs, a hacksaw and hand drill!!! I didnt even own an angle grinder back then!! Never again!!
One of you said about moving the engine forward. I cant! it would be too high, due to the ford v8 having the oil pump in the front of the sump. This means you cant have a rear dip sump and it fouls the xmember. I did however cosider fitting a crank driven blower, I saw one driven of fthe front pulley on a saab 900 owned by a chap called John Sleath at York, worked great and destroy the bonnet line. The car will look standard externally when finished, I intend painting it Caspian Blue, and have a full stripe kit in my loft!! I even built a 5 silencer exhauast to hide the engine noise, but its too heavy so i may just go with a single box and burble loudly!!

And how long you think the standard 302 block can take 700bhp?
From what I understand even 500bhp is enough to split the standard block after a while.
And thats when using turbos, with nitrous and/or a charger the stresses are worse (due to sudden power increase with the gas, and extra crank stress with the charger) and often fail about the same power, but quicker.
Good job so many uprated blocks are available

Itsmeagain? you said the 302 blocks crack at 500BHP? are you sure mate these are american iron you know, not Jap crap!! I have an engine spec to around 350 - 400 BHP (conservative) normally aspirated, the rest i was going to make up with a sniff of laughing gas.
I know a chap who put 900bhp of nos through a stock rover v8 for quite a long time, it grenaded eventually due to driver error. I dont think I know anyone who has cracked a block, ever, so do you speak from experience?
Anyway, thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement. I will take some up to date pics in the next few weeks, and I may even do some work on the old girl if im bored!!

Ive been in and around V8s for years mate, since as young as I can remember.
Even when I was about 5 my borther had a Ford Falcon that came with a 302 windsor but once the block had cracked he went for a big block.
You ever read much on these engines? The standard 302 can make great power, but the block isnt partuclarly strong mate, usually 500bhp is about the safe limit, and even then only if you dont rev it too high, 5500rpm is usually a good call as dont make power much higher anyhow.
Often getting that power via nitrous kills it quicker than say, turbocharged or n/a, like said, due to the way the powers delivered mainly.
This is why there are at least 4 companies that produce uprated blocks for them.
Ive seen them pushing more, but its a split block waiting to happen.
I love em, ive been planning on using one on a certain project for a long time, but id not want to spend any real money getting it over 500bhp as the block will crack even before the stndard internals fuck up on a well setup car...

Itsmeagain, couple of points mate. The 302 is just a stop gap to base line the car anyway, built with nos i wont have more than Ł2500 to Ł3000 in it including the manual flywheel clutch assembly (the car is built on a very tight and tiny budget, special offers, scrap yards etc). I know lots of people seem to say they crack, but it says bisto on the back of buses, but they dont sell it!! I get a bit sick of doom n gloom merchants, ive had hundreds tell me everything on my old capri is wrong, or wont last, 99% were wrong!! Dont knock it till youve tried it is my philosophy!!
As for Jap engines being strong, havent you heard of Imprezas!?!?
As for s13/s13a Nissans, the engines are OKish, but the body usually rots away around them before they get chance to wear out!!! (Hows your tailgate under the spoiler and are your cams quiet?!) You shouldve bought a capri to drift mate cheap 2.8i, Rover v8 bobs your uncle!!!
Oh and anyone who welds up diffs deserves to be locked up for the desire to commit suicide, its just bloody stupid. sorry but its dangerous full stop.
I dont do turbos mate they arent my bag. Tried it once, didnt like it. Too much lag, no torque and generally crap on fuel to boot!!
Anyway, dont want an argument, or to slag anyones car. If i ever get the old nail finished we will see if it breaks or not!! O and ill spank your s13 or GTR at york raceway anytime you like!!!

600+bhp and 10sec 1/4s are common in the UK with them now, even the odd road going one in the 9s in the UK now too. Low 8s Downunder.
Engines are dead strong, just got that bad rep as used to be mapped badly.
No such thing as an S13a.
CA18 engines are nothing special, but can do 350bhp on std internals easy enough, woudnt be my choice of an engine generally tho.
SR20s can do 400+.
Both can take 600+ with modded internals with no real hastle.
The body and tailgate if fine on mine thanks, strange you talk about rust when you on about Capris and RS1600i's anyhow
Cams are dead silent. Its big ends that go on S13s, mainly as most are ancient and not looked after.

When people turbo stock 302s with twin T3s from a scrapper they often make 500bhp and around 650lb/ft of torque...
Id like to see you manage 650lb/ft on a n/a 302...
Bigger spec ones often make 1000lb/ft+

Wouldnt 700bhp through a stock 4 speed capri box smash the shit out of it? Excuse my ignorance but i've not heard of anywhere near that power being used on that box before.

Chill out mate,
The s13a is the facelift model, identified with washer jets on the front bumper. Cant remember the year cut offs, similar but slightly diferent.
I had an impreza for two years, wrx. Fitted the obligatory clutch, weakness a, then had the gearbox rebuilt, weakness b, and then it spun no.3 big end shell, weakness c (and very, very common according to my local machine shop who keep shells for these on the shelf).
Ive worked on hundreds of different cars and engines, I know some strengths and some weaknesses. AS for the diffs mate on a road car it really aint safe, sorry. If the wheels cant have some speed difference they hop and kick about, plus eventually they break up through the force trying to rip themselves apart, that comes through racing experience of my dads.
I hope you do get tens when you finish your R32, im struggling really and was joking. Im only hoping for high 11s with my wallowy old capri on its standard old suspension. I did race a nice guy with an r33 last year(he was on gas too) but id better not mention that!!!

Oh n the gearbox probs will break if i get that much power, but i had one in the garage!!
They are very strong, and underrated though, the one in my capri has hada lot of abuse, daily use, smokey burnouts and drag racing for about twelve years, and doesnt even whine!!! It turns 220bhp at the wheels with 75bhp of gas. I didnt even rebuild it, just got it out of an early 2.8i n nailed it in, I uprate if things break!! Everyone said it wouldnt last, but it has, tho it does spin a lot and i think good traction might well kill it.
The next plan is to make an adaptor for a getrag 265 from a 4l Jag, they are real heavy, have power lock diffs as standard, and about 235bhp with a lot of torque so should last ok. Unfortunately they have an electronic speedo too so that could be expensive, we will see.

Cool, my mates having a new engine built for his 74 firebird at the moment. bored to 6.8ltr nothing fancy should hopefully push out 400bhp at the wheels. Apparently it did 13 second qtr's when it came out in 74 with 270bhp so it should be pretty good. He's also having some funky gearbox built. apparently its a manual box with an auto shift and a ratchet shifter. Not sure how it all works but apparently its supposed to be good.

Used to love firebirds Alays wanted one when i was young, could go for a 1968 Dodge charger now though. Bit dear, n a crap car (drum brakes all round with up to 325hp!!)chargers really but look o so cool
I dont think they Escort will run that good numbers really, ive built it too heavy, and cant face rebuilding the overworked bits of chassis!! You never know till you try though! I only really did it as a practice run before doing the same to a capri, but its so much work i couldnt face it again though!

Inside shot shows trimmed dash board, not a lot left really, n i might build my own from alloy yet not sure. You can see the mk4 doors hung.
Shot shows better view of mk4 cortina front clip. Inner wings gone, bar the front where tied into chassis. You can just see the wing rail and strengthener. I rolled a return lip on the edge of the remaining inner wing for strength and to finish it off tidier.

The carb is a 600cfm Holley double pumper, but i may not use this yet if i can get a 38dgas from a 3litre capri i will use thst instead.

too big for rover v8! What displacement is the rover, I have a 3.5 in my capri with a 020 thou overgore running on a 32/36 DGAV weber off a 1600GT capri. Runs great, makes 220bhp at wheels, good low and mid range pickup as well as screaming to 7000rpm!

Yea the tunnels huge!! But if you look at the pics with the engine in you will see how far back it sits.

The seats and pedals fit a treat! Using standard RS scheel seats, on standard runners but had to loose the door bins!!
The pedals are close, but i have modified and strengthened em to fit from a capri. If you have ever sat in a saxo, look at the pedals, there is more room between in my old nail!

That carb on a 2.9 if standard is probably a pierburg. Look similar to a weber, but have a rugby shaped (as you look down on it) top. If its a weber, it will have its size n type stamped on the side. look near the idle mixture screw at the base. Dont know much about the pierburg, usually use a weber!
