I'd also check to see if there's any fuel in the inlet plenum.
A mate of mine had the exact same symptoms on his 3 door and it turned out that the diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator had split and fuel was being drawn up into the inlet via the vacuum hose.
Just something else to check.

Not sure if you should do this but I have been told in the passed to remove a plug at a time from an injector and this should high light the cylinder if it is getting fuel or not. Also remove the leads one at a.time. this will tell you which cylinder is being a.dick. the ignition amp should be fine. I re greased it as well so thst wss all nice. Might be a gap size on a plug.

Well guys, When i could be bothered to take the plugs out i found a problem...
As you can see!
i also see they are not genuine plugs, i wonder if there is any other damage though, obviously atleast the bit of the plug has to be somewhere in there! I wonder why this would have happened.
Obviously got too hot?
Thanks for your help guys.

Heard lots of horror stories about Denso plugs melting and wrecking engines. Fingers crossed not too much damage.
#128
yep ive heard all the stories about Densos too but didnt realise they was in there,,, Should have checked.
So any chance at all that the engine isnt fucked? lol
ive ordered some 071s from Matt Lewis but im not holding out much hope, i dont have a comp tester but good chance this cylinder is knackered isnt there?

Well it's got to have gone somewhere. Chance in a million of it not doing the bore, piston, valves, head. If it has popped straight out, next stop the turbo!!! I'm not a pessimist but I think it's going to cost you pal.

dont about how knackered it could be, but I do have a compression tester you can borrow if required to check it out.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
If you're lucky it's embedded in the piston, if you're unlucky it's gone through the turbo etc as above.
Have heard of Denso plugs doing the same on VAG 1.8T engines.

i drove it home for about 6 miles so i doubt its still in the bore.... i dont have a bore scope to check.
Thanks Fil your pretty damn local too!
i have heard of this happening to people and it being fine but ive also heard extreme horror stories lol! I had considered it dead anyway so if it isnt then result, If it is then im only where i thought i was anyway.

car was still coming on boost, although i only brought it slightly on to test if turbo was ok, theres no blue smoke at all and no really horrible noises, other than the running on 3 of course.
pity there isnt an old plug in my garage just to test but ive looked everywhere

Big thanks to GingerTurbo for coming round and looking with the boroscope!
first impressions are actually quite good with some detonation marks and a small splattering of small metal particles embedded in the middle of the piston which believe it or not actually seems a good sign.
we think it could be ok and the bore looks quite clean, i will wack the plugs in and see how it runs.
If its fine then i will get it up on the ramps and start stripping front bumper and underneath of the car to go back 4WD.

sounds good.
but if your taking it off the road to 4x4 it. is it not worth the small extra time, taking the head off and inspecting it, as a new head gasket and cam belt can't hurt for not much money

right,
Spark plugs are in and it doesnt look good. Runs a lot better but hunting and not running properly thats for sure! plug number 2 keeps getting oily and when removing lead 1 or 2 it changes nothing in relation to the revs or anything.
obviously there is damage in there, its true you say that though Fil. time to strip car down i think and start building it up better than before. there are lots of things im not happy with anyway so ill start stripping when i can be bothered lol.
