Not all coilovers are rock hard, my Eibachs are fine for road use. Get ones made for road use from a good manufacturer. I don't know if AP do anything for your car but their Focus ones have great ride quality and are still firm enough to improve cornering.
Properly set up coilovers with the right springs rates are fine for road use.
Edit to say, you're best of to speak to whoever is supplying your coilovers, they'll be able to give you advice on springs rates etc.
