bunch of cunts

Main thing that im REALLY pleased about, is that my Edelbrook Pro Victor X intake manifold fits, thats a massive bonus, going to need to just dress back the bulkhead slightly in a couple of places as its a bit too close, but no actual touching at all

Nice update, a little light on pictures, but still puts across the idea well enough... have you got a target date for this in mind, or just an 'as and when' type of project mate??

Cheers,

I'm not really into the really detailed picture threads as you spend longer taking pictures than doing the work and Im really short on spare time sadly

Would like to have it ready for bedford next year, as a kind of vague target to aim for but its very much an as and when thing and Im lucky if I can spend more than a few hours a fortnight on it really as im constantly working away from home still at the moment and even on the couple of days a week when I am back I have a lot of work to do and also other projects on the go, not to mention a lot of weekends im either away with the mrs or at trackdays etc.
So no point me trying to put a deadline on it really.

I cut a front end off another clio to use for mocking up with.

Its also sectioned vertically on the front and rear bulkheads (and top slam panel at front is removable) this allows me to mock up one side at a time etc.

And more importantly means I dont scrap the yellow shell while "trial and error" fitting it all.

Picked up a cast T3 manifold for the B18C4 engine and gave it a try with a spare 4wd cossie turbo I had laying about and it seems to fit reasonably well although the exhaust routing is going to need to have some fairly tight bends in it so might be a little awkward to fabricate.

What made you go for a cast manifold of that design over a tubular one chip?

Bit random but could you measure the length of the b18 and gearbox at the widest points ?

Thanks

I wanted something that didnt come up too high, most of the tubular ones would come up as high as the rocker cover which would mean they would hit on the bonnet.
So I thought I'd try this as a cheap way of sitting the turbo at that sort of height for mocking up purposes etc.

If I decide to go tubular, which seems likely I'll probably get Ricky at racetech to make me a custom one, and at least I can use this as a reference for where I want the flanges to be sat if I do so.
If I ever want massive power out of it, I wouldnt use this, but as my goal is only around 300bhp, I am sure it would do that job just fine, so maybe it will just end up staying.

Fudgey, I will possibly use the EWG flange for an external gate as there is not much room for the actuator with the turbo so close to the radiator, but if not I will bear that in mind but TBH though it only takes 5 mins to cut out a bit of steel to use as a blank and drill 2 holes in it so probably not worth messing around.

Picked up a race technology dash for it now. Need to make a mounting panel but it fits quite well in the space where the standard 172 clocks would normally go in this dash.

Also got a data logger at the same time, which will connect to the ecu to log all parameters from that and then join them together with GPS and accelerometer readings etc so I can get plenty of info about how bad my driving is as well as how the engine is doing

Think I might actually put a williams engine in it briefly and make a loom up to run that on the autronic so that I can get the electronic side of things all working well ahead of the real engine arriving, will also give me a chance to get the brakes and suspension etc working how I want them too.
Bit of a backwards step in terms of the final end goal of honda turbo power, but will mean I can enjoy the car in the meantime and probably only take a few days realistically to put in a williams lump and map it etc.
My blue shell is getting really tired now anyway, so can nick all the bits from that for now

Decided to go with my plan of putting a Williams engine in for a while so I can develop the car while I'm working on the engine conversion on the other front end.

My blue mk1 shell is getting a bit tired so I've decided to bin it and use the engine from that.

Yanked it out yesterday from the blue one and this afternoon have put it in this one.

Also swapped the steering racks etc over as I want to run PAS and this shell had a williams rack converted to no PAS instead.

Will make a new loom for it on autronic management so that I can sort the ecu/dash/car wiring all out and then when the Honda engine goes in that side of it will all be sorted and I'll just need to alter the loom for the Honda lump and map it

Its partly to get the ECU talking to the dash and more to the point the data logger (I'd already bought the Autronic SM4 interface with the dash off of Rob) and partly to give me an excuse to use the Autronic as its a bit of an expensive ornament and it does have some really good features around the traction control side of things etc that should work well with the honda turbo lump later on.

Must confess though, I actually really like the Mtec V4, just because of tuner studio, it feels so much more modern and professional than the autronic software does TBH!

Lol, no worry of that mate, TBH Im putting it together this time more for my mrs to get some proper use out of than for myself as TBH I really would like more power, its only 170bhp or so on this engine so nowhere near enough for me to be happy with longterm and all the reasons I didnt want the renault engine in the first place like a lack of a decent box etc are all still there, so longer term it will still be going honda turbo.

It just seemed silly the mrs doing trackdays in her daily 172 or in the blue clio which has no cage etc, when we had this sitting there.

The way I see it the actual fitting of the engine is only a days work, and all the rest of the stuff to get it up and running needs doing for the honda project anyway, so its only 1 day wasted in order to allow her to use it for now.

Adam, you have to have a target with these things or they just drag on and on forever, if I havent got it done by llandow/FCS then thats 2 of probably only 4 or 5 events the mrs is likely to go to this year with it missed which would mean doing it at all would be a bit of a waste of time just for the other couple events and hopefully next year i'll be doing the honda conversion.

Plus I need this one done and dusted so I can crack on with the nova, which is my real interest, the clio I like a lot too, but its the nova that really is what I enjoy driving, even though the clio will no doubt be quicker round a track as it handles so much better.

Emerald software is just completely useless, I would hang myself if I ever wrote software that bad, EVERYTHING is better than Emerald.

But it is surprising that a budget ecu setup is outperforming even the high end stuff like Autronic from a mapping software point of view.

Tuner studio really does make most other software feel very out of date and look very amateur by comparison.

It wont impact the honda engine going in, if anything it will bring it futher forwar as it means that in the mean time I can get the electronics side of things sorted with this engine

The later shape ones are a lot better suspension wise, this one has a 172 suspension conversion on the front end but sadly the rear is a lot less trivial to do.
Its a fixed beam and the rear axle assemblies are part of it, so no opportuniy to shim to alter camber and toe, and its a torsion bar so no option for changing spring rate (although obviously an adjustable ARB is a good bet of course to alter roll resistance that way)
Could really do with getting a mk2 rear end into it at some point, but never seen anyone do it so I assume it wont be trivial to do!

Just ordered a load of the random little bits its easy to forget about when costing projects up etc.

Race battery + mount
Fire extinguisher (just a handheld)
Lightweight heater
Wiring braid and heat shrinks and connectors
Fuse holders and fuses
Switches
Relays

Over half a grand gone just on those random little bits, amazing how it all adds up.

Amazing how it adds up isn't it mate, all those £50 and £75 you never even think about when budgeting.

Just done the same when I worked out how much I spent on the s1 I'm doing at the moment.
