Default New engine, need advice

Hey, i need a bit of help.

Ive got the base model Escort MK5 with a 1.3HCS engine under the hood. Its currently dieing and likes to shout about it, ive just ground the tappets and given it a new set of gaskets but its still eating oil and petrol.

I want to get a new engine, something with a bit of torque (i have a large ICE install that need to be pulled around.) and something that can go over 70mph without making the pistons explode would be nice

what lumps could i put in? im looking for a straight cheap swap, doesnt have to have a turbo or anything special, just something with potential that wont cause too much hassle.

this swap will be done as soon as the HCS finaly kicks the bucket, ill be leaving the car alone for 2 years as im off to uni (so ive got plenty of time to put it in and get it running) just trying to plan ahead and consult the ford gurus of the world on how i should procede.

also ive recently put a white dial kit on and ive fuck*d up the needles, is there any way to reset them? gave me a bit of fun for the first 10 minits as i was going 140 (only doing about 50 tho ) but its a bit of a problem, also the petrol gauge is wrong.

sum up:

what engines are a straight cheap swap for a 1.3 HCS (prices / ideas / what ill need ect...?)

and how to reset speedo / petrol clocks on dash.

cheers all, loz.
