Default Pinto Turbo, Progress

i've been planning on doing a pinto turbo for about 4 years now since i had my old capri, got a few bits together then but never finished it

now ive got a sierra and i've nearly got all the bits to do it

heres the car

i made my manifold today

its not pretty but bloody strong

my intercooler, just fits nice in front of the sierra rad with the ports coming out in the right place in the bay

my turbos and other bits, one turbo for mocking it all up and testing then i'll change it, theres also a fuel pressure regulator there off a renault 5 GTT, this is so the carb allways has fuel pressure higher than the boost

the boost will be getting blown down the top of my 38DGAS

i should be making the plenum for the top of the carb on friday so i'll keep the updates coming

thanks for looking

i've been telling myself i'm going to get it done for the last 6 months, i just got stuck in last week and bought a few parts

just need a fuel pump now, i might just go the scrap yard and get an injection tank

then its just odds and sods like pipes and jubilee clips but i've got some 2 inch pipe to make solid boost pipes out of, i might tidy the bay up a bit while i'm at it lol

check out my ghetto pcv valve

looking good.

A bit off topic but the big case full of spanners and wrenches looks like a good tool set, what make is it? Quite fancy one like that with everythink all in one box.

this may sound stupid to most of you, but is that the standard carb, inlet manifold?

besides the obvious exhaust manifold, turbo, intercooler and plenum for the carb (great work by the way), what else do you need to do this kind of job?

cheers

the carb is just an old 38dgas of a capri, the inlet manifold is normal too, this is pretty experimental so far, i've not sorted the fuelling out yet, i need a high pressure pump so i can use the renault 5 turbo fuel pressure regulator, this alters the fuel pressure with the boost

i'm also planning on rigging a 5th (or 1st lol) injector in there somwhere, going to make it activate on a pressur switch

the ignition timing is going to need tweaking also

does the pressure of the turbo not affect the carb? Find this really interesting and what proper mechanical tuning is all about, not plugging into a computer. good stuff mate

isn't it best to use a turbo carb for this kind of projects?

external fuel pump?

also, is the inlet manifold from a capri?

it proberbly would be better, but i allready have this carb so i may aswell use it, i think the inlet is off a capri but not from a 3.0 like the carb

and yes, i'm going to use a bosch out of tank fuel pump as soon as i can get down the scrapyard and find one. like the old xr3i fuel pump

at the minute it does yes becuse the fuel pressure is too low and the boost pressure is stopping fuel from going into the carb. once this is sorted though it sould be fine

the float chamber is fed pressure through the breather as the box on top of the carb covers it. this means the carb SHOULD behave as normal because there is even pressure all through it

ah right i see, so its just a case of increasing the fuel pressure?

wont the vacuum effect be higher due to the turbo?

Think you will have problems feeding the engine with fuel when the pressure comes through the carb. These carbs is not built for pressure

EDIT: Just read the post above :P

you mean the vaccum that sucks the fuel in? i'm hoping it will be higher. there is more air going in so i'm hoping it'll suck plenty more fuel in too
