The engine was taken out of the car again today so I could begin working on the external wastegate pipework, some progress has been made with it but not a lot, i'll have more to show tomorrow.

While the engine was out I cut a hole in the side panel for the exhaust tailpipe.

Size: 64.3 KB

Name: Exhausttailpipe2Medium.jpg
Views: 768
Size: 58.8 KB

The hole is a bit on the small side at the moment so the talpipe isn't sitting correctly, it will angle a little more towards the rear of the car when it's finished.

This morning I started work on plumbing the screamer pipe back into the exhaust

Cut the flange off the original screamer pipe and also cut the first bend and rewelded it at a different angle, fitted to the wastegate it looks like this

Name: ExternalWastegatePipework01Medium.jpg
Views: 834
Size: 61.9 KB

The next piece was them cut to suit and redirect the pipework back towards the exhaust

Name: ExternalWastegatePipework04Medium.jpg
Views: 746
Size: 32.0 KB

Then welded together

Name: ExternalWastegatePipework06Medium.jpg
Views: 822
Size: 45.1 KB

And the final piece of the puzzle was fabricated

Name: ExternalWastegatePipework07Medium.jpg
Views: 766
Size: 59.9 KB

Now the final piece needs welding in and it's finished.

Me too!

If it does then a completely segregated but silenced screamer pipe could be the order of the day.

Another small update, I fitted the front brake lines and reservoir to the car today

Name: BrakeLines03Medium.jpg
Views: 784
Size: 72.3 KB

and the rear lines

Name: BrakeLines04Medium.jpg
Views: 792
Size: 71.8 KB

The Aerocatch bonnet fasteners are now all fitted to the bonnet, I might get round to fitting the pins to the chassis tomorrow, meaning the bonnet can be fitted to the car.

Done a very tidy job with the Aerocatches. Are you just sealing them on or using alloy bolts/rivetts too?

Cheers lads

AquariousRS - They're purely bonded on, didn't want to use any other fasteners as it'd spoil the look of them, I might bond an extra piece of material over the rear of the aerocatches giving them better adhesion to the bonnet due to an increase in bonding surface area.

Right then, here's update

The posty knocked on the door and handed a few parcels, first off some gaskets and 70mm aluminium tube to extend the pipes on the intercooler.

Name: GasketsMedium.jpg
Views: 753
Size: 54.0 KB

Then another parcel arrived, Thermo Tec High Heat Coating to seal the exhaust wrap which has not arrived yet!

Name: ThermoTecCoolItMedium.jpg
Views: 749
Size: 40.7 KB

Finished off the brake lines by running the last hose down the centre of the car to the rear brake tee piece.

Fitted the fuel level sender and sump pot to the petrol tank, will get some photos of this part tomorrow and then fastened the tank into position

Name: PetrolTankMedium.jpg
Views: 726
Size: 51.7 KB

The turbo outlet pipe needs to be modified because the engine cradle is directly in the way, so I set about removing the compressor cover and cutting off the original outlet

Name: TurboModification01Medium.jpg
Views: 803
Size: 77.4 KB

A few bits of aluminium pipe were cut to length and they're all ready to be welded, hopefully tomorrow morning

Name: TurboModification02Medium.jpg
Views: 749
Size: 75.2 KB

While the turbo was in pieces I took the chance to measure it up

Name: TurboCompressorWheel76mmMedium.jpg
Views: 1194
Size: 44.6 KB

it looks as though it's not actually a GT3071R, because it has a 76.2mm compressor wheel not the 71mm, but the exhaust side looks to be the same as the GT3071R, so it could be some kind of GT3071/76 hybrid

I've started a thread in general discussion about the turbo and my findings, so hopefully one of the gurus wull shed some light on the subject and put me in the know!

Gt3071 and gt3076 turbos are the same on the exhaust side the compressor side is the difference iirc !

With a 76.1 ish mm exhaust wheel id say it is a gt3076

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob..._700382_12.htm

Possibly

Ps, can't say I've ever seen that compressor housing on a gt3076 !

I used the new titanium exhaust wrap on mine you don't have to coat it and it keeps the heat back better than the normal stuff.
Car looks nice mate keep up the good work. When are you hopeing to finish the beast.

Cool, cheers for the input Jimbo

The tapered throat in the centre of the compressor housing looks like it can be removed, although i've not tried to remove it.

This is the heat wrap I've ordered

The car will be on the road around May next year (hopefully sooner) just in time for the start of the decent weather.

That sounds like canny stuff, might try it next time i need to wrap an exhaust, but late now as i've already ordered the other Thermo Tec stuff.

I've not done any work on the car today but took delivery of some exhaust manifold gasket rings, a 100 micron fuel filter with AN8 fittings to go between the petrol tank and the 044 pump and a 30 micron fuel filter with AN6 fittings to go between the pump and fuel rail.

The turbos compressor housing pipework has been welded up today by Arctec Engineering in Sunderland, the cast aluminium compressor cover was pre heated prior to the welding being carried out, then the welds were checked with die penetrant to check for any flaws.

It was a bit more than I wanted to pay, they charged me their hourly rate of 50 quid, but it's a pukka job so can't complain too much really.

I originally took it to SDC Services in Sunderland, recommended to me by dangerousbrian, they're a small outfit that manufacture and install catering equipment. They looked at the job and said they could weld it up but with it being cast it'd be best to have it pre heated before carrying out the work to ensure it was a good weld, they then recommended taking it to Arctec Engineering who welded it up.

I'll definitely be returning to SDC Services with my inlet manifold, intercooler and radiator to have welding done on them once i've finished preparing and cutting the materials.

Unfortunately the exhaust wrap has still not been delivered so the engine is sitting next to the car waiting for the manifold to be wrapped before it can be slotted into the chassis!!!

There are still plenty jobs to be done before the engine is fitted so i set about sorting a few of them out, trial mounted the Bosch 044 fuel pump, you'll have to excuse the dust on the chassis, it looks far worse than it actually is

The rubber strip between the chassis and the pump cradle could do with trimming too, to tidy it up a bit.

Name: FuelPumpLines01Medium.jpg
Views: 737

Here you can see the AN8 (-8) aeroquip hoses and 100 micron fuel filter.

Name: FuelPumpLines03Medium.jpg
Views: 759
Size: 65.3 KB

The black sump bolted to the petrol tank is the original ZX10R fuel pump/level sender housing, it has been modified to support an AN8 (-8) feed to the pump and an AN6 (-6) fuel return.

The green masking tape is there to keep dirt out of the fuel lines until this AN8 straight coupler turns up in the post.

Do you live anywhere near Kilwinning? My mate lives there, I'll be up that area with it from time to time over the summer next year to see him, you're welcome to a run out in it if you're around at the time.

I chopped up the inlet manifold the other day and took it to be tig welded, hoping to have it back on Friday I've since began modifying the intercooler inlet/outlet pipework again, at the moment it's not quite ready to be welded up, photo updates still to come.
