The way i do it, is the way alot of top Racers do it in the pits on race day, using string lines.

OK, been slacking on updateing my car thread, Heres what i've done since the last post.

Heres pic's of my adjustable front hubs i modded 13-8-06

My front shocks.

The front wheels/front arches, once back on the floor.

i modded the n/s tie bar some more, so i had 4' castor both sides.

My final Setup for road/track.

Fronts, 2mm toe in, 4' castor, and 2.5' camber on both sides.
Rears, untouched and same as before.

Done a Full trackday @ Lydden Hill on the 26-8-06

What a good day, done about 110 laps today, in conditions ranging from damp - water logged, and 2 sessions dry.

i've improved my lap times in my xr2t to 49's + 50 deads in the dry, with damp patches (which is a ave 2 seconds faster than before in complete dry) and still with bad fuel surge on the left hander and up the hill.
52's on goodyear F1 tyres in the damp.
55's in flooding ran, with nearly no vision, and puddle's across the track.

Here's little clips my brother shoot, and down loaded. Cheers Ben

Some of a damp/wet session just after lunch

http://media.putfile.com/lydden-26806

Heres My new Dunlop slicks i got the week before the trackday.(the top 4 slicks in the pic's.)
They are Dunlop, Fiesta challenge slick tyre, 175/555/15, but cos its a controlled tyre for that race series, they only do them in med/hard, 770 compound. and cost Ł500 for set of 4, so very dear. but only slick that will fit my car, with out scrubbing, (or well they did scrub at first on hard cornering once they had got to working temp, but i removed more from front arch which cured it.)
Total size fitted to my 6" rims @ 30psi, are 184mm o/a width, 172mm tread width, and 555mm o/a hieght

They were fine on the front, but too hard for the rear, as couldn't get them hot enough on my road rear Setup,

And pic's of the Goodyears i was using in damp and wet, i even had them on the rear when i done my best times.

Spent a quite a few hours over the last few weeks, making and changing stuff to fit a Reno 5 turbo Carb, and fitted it and got it running last weekend.
i done this to help cure the fueling issue on all TT's i've seen.

And over the last week, after work for a couple of hours on a few nights, i've rejetted the Reno carb for my TT. now fitted 2.2mm needle, and 127 main, 125air.

this is the data i took, whilst testing on Wednesday. on low boost

RPM, Boost after carb (psi), Fueling (afr), ACT's (oC), pressure drop across the carb.(psi)

1000rpm---vac-------14.0afr---24oC---0psi.
2000rpm---2psi-------10.2afr---19oC---0psi.
2500rpm---4.5psi-----12.4afr---18oC---0psi.
3000rpm---9psi-------12.4afr---19oC---1psi.
3500rpm---11.5psi---12.2afr---21oC---2psi.
4000rpm---11.5psi---12.0afr---27oC---2.5psi.
4500rpm---10.5psi---11.6afr---29oC---3.5psi.
5000rpm---10psi-----12.0afr---29oC---4psi.
5500rpm---9.5psi----11.8afr---29oC---4psi.
6000rpm---8.5psi----12.0afr---30oC---5psi.
6200rpm---8.5psi----12.2afr---30oC---5psi.

This is the data from the same boost settings on the xr2TT carb

2000 rpm_______ 2 psi________ 9.8:1 AFR
2500 rpm_______ 4 psi_______ 11.0:1 AFR
2700 rpm_______ 6 psi_______ 11.0:1 AFR
3000 rpm_______ 9 psi_______ 12.2:1 AFR
3100 rpm______ 10 psi_______ 11.8:1 AFR
3300 rpm______ 11 psi_______ 11.6:1 AFR
3500 rpm______ 11.5 psi______11.5:1 AFR
4000 rpm______ 11.5 psi______11.0:1 AFR
4500 rpm______ 11.5 psi______10.8:1 AFR
5000 rpm______ 10 psi_______ 11.8:1 AFR
5500 rpm______ 10 psi_______ 12.0:1 AFR
6000 rpm______ 10 psi_______ 12.6:1 AFR

as above you see the carb gets more and more restricted the further up the rpm, i have now connected the actuator to a outlet on the carb which is boost only, and before the throttle, so still opens the wastegate on over run, But now it boost with in 1 psi thro out the rev range.
i will post up the data on the new boost setup later this week.

The engine will still not rev past 6200-6300rpm, i have changed cam and tappets, and still the same as when i had the kent 36 cam. But i didn't change the valve springs, so i'll change them next, to see if that will change anything.

At the mo, its running 12.7 - 13.8 on cruise, so i need to play with the enricher setup in the carb, to get it to run 14.0-15.0 on cruise.

Warren Rowley says its okay. He has made silly money working as a consultant for NASCAR teams over the years setting them up.

If you got alot time read his book... http://www.rowleyrace.com/

Has some good software too, you can model castor, camber etc and put the car in roll play with ride height etc

Hoping to measure my mk3 up and have a play

UPdate TIME.

- 1st off,
i pressure tested the R5 carb to 20psi, and stone me dead, NOT A LEAK, silent. just a few tiny bubbles from the butterfly shaft, (i get the same on my cossie)

- 2nd off,
i connected the actuator to a outlet on the carb, (inlet mani boost pressure only)
and now runs with in 0.5 psi from 3500 to 6200 rpm

- 3rd i've managed to get it running 18 psi after carb, and it fuels 12.3-12.5 :1 AFR from 3500 to 6200 rpm. Thats the best i've seen any xr2 N/A or TT's fueling under full throttle.
Ps its fly's. It feels alot better than when i was running 18 psi on the TT/xr2 carb, purely due to the AFR being correct thro the rev's.

-4th
Theres one major draw back, which i've been trying to sort, and have improved it no end, but still far from prefect.
and thats the fueling on cruise. ITs loves to over fuel, Where as i had my TT carb set at 14.5 - 15.5:1, i was seeing 9.8-16.8: 1 at different throttle positions.
i have since got it to 11.5 - 16:1, But need to get it to 14.0 -15.5 :1 as below 13.5:1 is mega rich for cruise, and bore washing the engine, and above 15.2:1 causes flat spots and hassertation.
But due to the design of the R5 carb its not simple to change, it has fixed jets built in the carb, so i'm drilling this, and spending ages making sure no swarf is still in the carb.

But also i dont know how well a R5 runs off boost, so might be a common thing.

i'm now running, a 120main jet, a 125 air let, a 0.5 enricher fuel jet, and a 1.5mm fixed jet. and a 2.2mm needle.
a std R5 runs 120 main, 125 air, 1.0mm enricher, and a 1mm fixed. and a 1.7mm needle.

i've tried from 1.0 -1.5 mains, 0.5 - 1.25 enricher, 1.0 - 1.5 fixed, and 1.7 - 2.2 needle.
But what i'm using fuels fine at top end, but ok on cruise. with some flat spot's.

-5th
i've had to modifie the samco pipe that connects to the top of the carb, as had problems of blowing off, but now cured.

After playing with the carb alot the other saturday

i still cant get it to fuel well off boost.

i've manage to get 13.0-13.3:1 on town driving, and 14.0:1 on motorway, and keeping fueling @ on boost 12.0-12.2:1.
But it has a large flat spot @ 3200 - 3600 rpm, under slight acccelaration, AFR goes to 16- 17.0:1, and seems to be were it changes from vacum to boost, I've tracked it back to the enricher diapham set up, but cant cure it.

i've tried everything nearly, and starting to believe thats as good as the R5 boys most do. as never seen a tuned R5 with a AFR fitted.

On sunday 15th Oct i took a trip to Avon, Shakespear Raceway.

With problems with lack of power (Terminal speeds 3mph lower than my last times with lower spec) and believe it to be due to the std XR2 cam its running at the moment.

Best was 13.69 @ 100.1 mph which is my new PB,
with 60ft of 2.205, and 1/8th of 8.866 @ 81.0 mph

but also run 8 more 13's. with my PB 60ft of 2.197 on a 13.70@99mph run.

All done on S2 rst box, Goodyear F1 road tyres

i think from the boost, and ign and going off RR readouts of the summer, it most be around 180bhp @ mo.
As on my only dry run @ the fiesta thrash with PF mag, i manage a 14.5@99mph on a crap launch @ 12psi which was 179 bhp/fly, 148bhp/wheels, and 170 lbft/fly. on a RR 1 week before.
and yesterday all my speeds were similar, with good launches, which shows its got to be less power and i was running at 17psi yesterday on the 13.6 run.

and all i've changed since the fiesta thrash is the Cam (from Kent CVH36 to a 70k mile std Xr2 one), (and carb which i think has improved it, not made it worse)

once i get the power back to 200bhp, with higher CR, different head and new solid lifters and cam, As well as my new Quaife diff, i hope to see low 13's @ 105mph (thats what i wanted yesterday before my first run showed the power problem)

Gearbox update

A early xr2 final (3.58:1) will give me 9 mph @ 6000rpm in 5th, and 1.6 diesel (3.33:1) will give me 20 mph @ 6000rpm in 5th. compared to my s2 box (3.82:1)

i checked my gears in the box i'm building, and here's the what i found

1st = 3.15
2nd = 1.91
3rd = 1.28
4th = 0.95
5th = 0.76
Final 3.579

After building the box yesterday, i fitted it last night, and went out to test it.

But the box needs re stripping as the gear change isn't right going down the box.

But the final has improved the speeds in the gears, but on low boost (13psi) seems abit slower.

i was testing it on my local Track, and even tho it was wet, the front end seemed to grip alot better round tight roundabouts on power, as long as i'm not pushing it past the grip, where it just lets go (same as the rst box)

Got a Brands hatch trackday on Wen's 25th Oct to give it a good testing.

Will upload pic's of my Bucket seat, gearbox and other things i've done in the updates.

Well update time.

First of all, i would like you to meet the fastest Kat on this site. lol

The bucket seat and harness i fitted in the xr2tt, 9-06

24-6-06

I sorted the gearbox issue after i rebuilt my box, ended up just being 5th gear selector needing ajustment.

some pics of the build.

25-10-06, had a Brandshatch trackday,

i set the car up for -2' fr camber, and 1mm toe in, and was all set for a good/fast day. But

What can i say, not a good day.

-09.05 sighting laps,
-09.20 out for 1st blast,
-9.25ish rad split, but didn't realise till all coolant had gone (about half a lap)
-09.30 - 11.45 searching around for a motor factor, and new rad.
-12.00 back at brands with new rad.
-12.15 testing cooling system, then on and off the track testing the cooling system. and all seemed fine
-12.45 - 12.55 hard on it, but after 3 laps coolant got tooo hot (100oC) (new rad was nowhere near as good as old one, done a cool down lap, than had a blast with Simon and a pulser, but Coolant rocked to from 95 -110oC in half a lap. so gave it 2 cool down laps and went back in the pits.
-12.55 reliesed its pressureised itself.
-14.15 went back out and after 2 laps brought it back in, and coolant system was at 90oC but pressureised,
-16.45 went out again for 3 more laps, after checking car over (believe the heads slightly warped from the rad leak).

But did
managed a 1.02's in the damp on road tyres on low boost at around 12.50.
and then managed a 1.01:2 and a 1.01:7 @ 16.45 on dry track, but spitting, and cold road tyres.

Also My brother had a oil leak from the turbo oil feed @ 15.10 ish which brought a end to his day.

But i had 20 mins driving of it between 14.20 - 14.50, which was a bonus. and managed a 59.7 on 2nd outing, did go faster in 1st outing, but no lap timer fitted, As well as i Got a Black flad for Tyre sqeew. and told to slow it down.

my Brother then took it out, (1st time in the complete dry for him) but after 3 hot laps and still getting faster, it started smoking on over run,
which ended up being oil feed to the turbo was leaking all over the exhaust. Even tho Ben tried, couldn't get the car fixed. So that was his day over too.
He managed 1.00:4 and a 1.00:7 on the 2 laps upto the oil leak.

i think Ben would of got into the low 59's if the oil leak didn't happen.

And as for me, think i would of done 59's with the road tyres, and 58's if i got to run with my slicks.

My car drove home fine, as the coolant issue's only when on full throotle/boost.
But my Brothers got trailor'd home by a mate, and my Brother drove his car home (which was trailor'd there.

i've since been using the car every day, and not had any issue's or water loss. But i'm not been booting it (have a couple of times).

This week,

i've fitted a new starter motor, and rewired the alternatar, as stopped chargeing.

i've got new plans for the xr2tt.

1. fit a flowed RST head.
2. fit a T3 turbo, stg2 or 3, make a new 2.5" down pipe and zorst.
3. Newmans solid lifter cam
4. larger alloy rad,
5. Adjustable TCA's, Can make these for other peeps to.
6. Gaz shocks
7. body repair and spray.

Thanks Paul.

Time for a upate,
abit long, as not updated for a few months, but all from a log i keep about my cars.

================
25-11-06

done a leak test on the xr2tt, and it show's H/G slightly gone between cyclinder 1 and water way.

also checked what speeds my new gearbox does @ set rpms.

Gear----Rpm------Speedo------Snoopper.

2nd---6000rpm----48mph-------55mph.
3rd---6000rpm----78mph-------83mph.
4th---6000rpm---112mph-----113mph.
5th---4000rpm----91mph-------95mph.

On my old s2 std rst gearbox when at brunters i done @ 6200rpm(rev limit) i did 2x 133mph by half way @ brunters @ the PF fiesta thrash my snoopper read 135mph, and the racelogic read 133.3 mph.
but on same gearbox, with a different spec head/cam, i have done 140 on my snooper up hill, and on flat, @ 6500 rpm, and passengers.

So working off above data for the new gearbox, @ 6700rpm in 5th i'll be doing 158 mph.
and @ 6200 in 5th i'll be going 144 mph 'true speed'.

================
16-12-06

a few weeks ago i got a RST head, used and std, but been skimmed,

over the last few nights i have

completely striped it,
fully ported and flowed the ports,
removed the valve guide stem, for flow.

and today i'll finish it off, grind and lap the valve in.

====================
17-12-06

Finished off P+F 'n my new cvh head, and its all fully lapped in, and CC checked.
it will be 8.23 C/R now, compared to my Stg3 which was running 7.92.

i was planning on going Hi comp again, but as i'm gonna try for more power on the T3, i thought its best to leave it, and see how it goes.

==================
25-12-06

As i'm sitting here bore'd round my parents house, waiting for the dinner i thought i will up date what i have done on the tt this week.

Before i do that, i'll tell you's of the problems i've seen over the last 4 months ish,

-about 4 months ago, i went out to check the setup on my TT as it started to idle/run badly, and the static timing had moved, from around 114' to 0', i couldn't work out why, as i keep all my last set up details in the ashtray.
Anyway i put it down to my mistake, as it was last setup over 5 weeks before.

-but i also thought the lag had got worse and felt slower against my brothers and mates cars on trackdays. and also i the compressions had dropped from 170 psi to 150 psi, which i thought it was due to the new R5 carb being used for a week, while it was over fueling, and caused bore wash.

- then when i went to Avon race way i had issue's of slow terminal speeds, which showed to me i was 20 bhp lower than it should be, which i put down to, that i replaced the kent cam to a std XR2 cam.

i went to take the stg 3 head off the car on Monday night,

and i always check it all first,ie cam timing, head bolts torque, and compressions.
So when i checked the cam timing, it had moved from 104' to 115ish,
which shows it had jumped a tooth, and gives a good reason for all the problems i have been seeing.

any how, before i took the old head off,

i trail fitted a T3 turbo and rst mani, and measured up to see what issue i will come up against,

and the only 2 real issues, will be the usual down pipe, which isnt to bad, and a Radiator fan space issue, as i no longer have room for the xr2 fan i have been using. So i'm looking into what i can do with after market fans.

Before i fitted the new head, i fitted the std ford oil warmer/cooler, along side my Mocal oil cooler, and fitted a new 88oC stat, as in this weather the engine coolant/oil takes to long to warm up.

i also fitted a brand new starter motor.

The heads now fitted, and its been fine since Wednesday, and once i've checked the head bolts, and cam timing, i'll give it some wellie, and see how it fairs to the last head.

And now after a long run, on both a motorway, and round town, coolant sits and stays @ 92oC, and oils @ 70 oC, which is better than it used to run, which was 82oC coolant, and 60oC oil temp, after simlar drives.

==============
28-12-06

Its m.o.t time for the TT.

list to do.

1 new tyre, F n/s due to the outer edge worn due to track time.
chassie leg welding, (done today)
inner Fr o/s wing welding, (started today)
Fr n/s head light replacing
cv boot needs new clip,

===============
29-12-06

Work done,

done all the welding, always more needed than planned. but done it all in St/St so wont rust again.

fitted the EGT gauge, rewired my fan.

=============
31-12-06

Stuff i did yesterday,

- finished the welding under the front arch's, sealed it all, and wax oil'd it, will do another coat dueing the next week.
- had to rewire a earth to the EGT gauge, as it had a fault once lights etc were turned on, due to a earth being weak.
- pressure tested the whole boost system.
- compression test, 1=175psi, 2=172psi, 3+4= 180 psi, which has gone back up since i have retimed the cam in correctly again, and slightly higher due the higher c/r.

- Road test,
-det checked, ign timing setup for different boost settings.
13psi = 18' static, 19psi = 12' static, which is 2 degrees more retarded @ same boost than with last head with a different c/r.

Coolant stayed @ 92oC, and 3-8psi header tank pressure, oil temp 80oC
ambients were 7oC,

Since i fitted a new head, with std size valves, and std valve springs the engine would not rev past 5400 ish, as valve bounce was present, and caused the tappets to over pump, and caused the engine to miss for 5 seconds after if hit those revs.
compared to my stg 3 head, on o/s valves and kent cams valve springs would rev to 6200rpm. So i will try the kent springs in new head, to see if thats to blame.

I also watched the EGT gauge on different boost/ign timing. all held to 5400 in 5th,

@ 13psi and 18' timing = peak/held egt's - 1410oF, 766oC
@ 13psi and 12' timing = peak/held egt's - 1475oF, 802oC
@ 19psi and 12' timing = peak/held egt's - 1500oF, 816oC, 37oC act's peak.

I also RPM/Boost/AFR/ACT checked from 2500 - 4500 rpm @ 19psi setting and 12' static timing. in 4th gear, held at set rpm for 4-6 seconds.

2500rpm-----07psi-----13.4afr-----16act.
3000rpm-----09.5psi---12.7afr-----15act.
3250rpm-----16psi-----12.5afr-----20act.
3500rpm-----17.5psi---12.4afr-----
3750rpm-----18psi-----12.4afr-----20act.
4000rpm-----19psi-----12.1afr-----23act.
4500rpm-----19psi-----12.0afr-----28act.

i've sold my TT T25 turbo and mani, st/st down pipe, heatshields, and in part ex i recieved a T3, which i'll be fitting over the next couple of weeks.

My drivers wing mirror got smashed by a old boy, who couldn't judge gaps, and tried to pass me @ 35mph (i slowed to 10mph if less) on a narrow country lane. i did get Ł10 off him tho, after long discussion before he would pay.

I also sprung a leak on the fuel tank this morning, on the under neath, so i've drained all the fuel (just filled up last night), and need to remove and repair it, thats another job to add to the expanding list.

other stuff i want to do in the next couple of days.

fit my autometer EGT gauge,
replace the dash, as broken in 2 places.
tune up on new head,
check lag of new head, whilst playing with cam timing to get the optimum.
Fit T3 turbo.
replace sump gasket, and driveshaft seal.

And sort a new Radiator fan, if i cant get what i want,

i'll look into getting a larger rad (so i'll have room for larger fan, and to cure my trackday coolant temps issue's)
but at the same time the cossie intercooler with have to be ditch'd, 1- for a better item, 2- to make room for new rad and fan.

then a Newmans cam setup, and maybe a 2.5" zorst.

Some pic's

mocal oil cooler

Ford oil cooler/warmer and mocal sandwich plate.

New head,

Last engine bay pic of engine bay, with T25 fitted

T3 setup, but i will be makeing my own downpipe.

a spare t3, i trail fitted with a old rad,

================
29-01-07

Not done anything to the xr2tt since last year, its just been sat up in the garage waiting for work to be done, but i've been out their over the week end.

So i've nearly finished the RST mani and turbo fitment, then got to make a new down pipe, and start her up.

But i've managed to fit the T3 with out needing to cut the cross member out, or modifie the down pipe.
How? i hear you ask. Ha, i'll put some pics up this week once i've got it all on.

Then i have to sort a new Rad fan set up,
fuel tank leak,
sump gasket,
cv boot,
gearbox/driveshaft seal replace,
heater matrix replace
Dash replace, and gauges remount.

Then M.O.T, tune up, Newmans cam, 2.5" zorst, new rad/inter set up.

21-02-07

No update, been too bizzie/ lazy.

24-02-07

Just reliezed i've booked the TT for a RR day next saturday, and it will be a real hard rush to get it running, But i'll give it a shot.

Update.

1-03-07

- My new modified RST ex mani fold is finished, flowed, refaced and painted
- My T3 turb has been flowed, checked over, modified in a few places for ease of removal once fitted, and painted.

The manifold mod's i have carried out have relocated the turbo
-slightly closer to the alternator by around 5mm,
- closer to the engine, so more room to the rad, between 10.5-20.5mm at different corners of the turbo flange face, with a Ave of 15.5mm in the centre of the turbo flange face.
- the turbo has also been leveled out slightly, where i have raised the exhaust side higher, and the comp housding lower.

The total cost/time spent on the Turbo and mani mod's are about 15-17 hours, Ł75 in costs alone.

12-03-07

- The new mani and turbo is fitted, and airfilter, and boost pipes have been modified to suit the new turbo.
- I've fitted a boss on the manifold side of the turbo, so i can check the egt's and back pressure before and after the turbo.
- i've started making flange plates for the new exhaust.
- I resprayed the inner wing, after the welding i done @ xmas time.
- i removed the sump, to replace the gasket, but i got abit carried away, as i do. And ended up spending today, designing, making a new baffled sump, and i'm very happy with the outcome, pics to follow.

Some pic's.

Std RST mani and my new modified rst mani.

And this was my old T25 setup.

Dan, once again mate. You're one of the most original thinking people I know that doesn't run a business being an original thinker.

Also fitted sump, and made a polished alloy alternator heat shield.

Some pic's

My New St/St down pipe

My new Alternator heat shield.

And the engine bay all back together. Now with T3.

Been out in the TT tonight.

with 11 static timing.

- With bleed tap fully in = hit 9 psi, hold 7 psi @ 5300 in 5th,
1650 oF EGT's before turbo, 15oC ACT's, with 11.5:1 AFR
-Tap = 2 turns, 14psi @ 2500+ rpm, 1650 EGT's, surge at 2000ish rpm.
-Tap = 3 turns, 8 psi @ 2250rpm, spool up 2300-2500rpm, 19psi @ 2500rpm, boost flickering between 16-19 psi = 2500-5300rpm in 5th (think i have a bost leak somewhere), No det, and 11.9-12.2 in 5th gear 4000rpmto 5300rpm.
- Tap = 3.5 turns, 2500rpm = 20psi = surgeing
- Tap = 5 turns, 2500rpm = 25psi = massive surge, poping and banging.

So outcome,
T3 turbo-
ACT's are the same, on the same boost and ambients,
spool up is mega improved, but it dont feel very fast and boost is flicking above 15psi, so think i have a boost leak, which i will sort this week.
It dont feel very fast, but that could be either the boost leak/issue or that the turbo isn't producing the power my old T25 was.

Cut down fan-
Its enough to stop it cooking, but doesn't cool the temps, just stops/slows it from raising
