Escort Zetec turbo build 11 sec 1/4
BUILDING A ROAD LEGAL TRACK CAR
It all started off catching the 1/4 mile bug going to a few pod days in my s2 turbo.
Turning out to be a stripped out second car which spends most of its life in my garage in
bits but i have managed to have her round Silverstone and get in plenty of 1/4 mile days
with my best time being 13.6 with 195bhp and 224lbs/ft.
spec
1.6 standard bottom end
standard head
standard turbo
Kent 36 cam kit and pully
Apexi boost controller
Omex rev limiter
Collins ecu
Mitsubishi Evo 4 intercooler
CTS stage 2 plus box
AP 4 paddle clutch
light and balanced fly wheel
Gaz coilovers
Scorpion full system 3"
Car weight = 820kgs
I was thinking about breaking it and laying off the car scene for a bit but couldn't bring myself
round to do it so now i'm going full out for a Zetec Turbo 1/4 mile bute hoping to get her into
the 11's but we'll see how that goes!
Zetec Turbo parts so far:
Zetec silvertop lump
JE Pistons
Eagle rods
ARP bolts. head, main, flywheel, con rods
Alloy bottom pulley
Nissan 480cc injectors side feed
RS 1800 inlet
Exhaust manifold
Nos
omex 710
Tial 44mm wastegate
new JE pistons, i'm gonna be running a 9 comp on my Zetec build. I know a lot of people run a
low comp and more boost but i'm going for a 14-18 psi and 100 shot of NOS to help me out.
These pistons are supposed to be rated 900bhp and 300 shot of NOS - we'll see how that holds
out.
CTS Stage 2 plus box with Quaife ATB, i ended up buying this box due to my nature of driving -
i got through 2 standard RS Turbo butes. So i thought instead of wasting my money keep buying
boxes, oil and the hassel of keep swapping them so i went out and bought this one new from Bernie
himself as i heard a lot of good things about the boxes and i must admit i've had no problems with it
apart from it weeping oil out of the cover plate and it did bring my times down on the 1/4.
Intercooler -
Fun and games i had here, started off with buying a Pace double capacity one, you can just see it in
the pic at the top of me going down Santa Pod. Thinking these were supposed to be good, it wasn't
until i got myself an ACT gauge that i noticed that temperatures were indeed going into the 70's which
is very bad. I don't know if anyone else has ever had this problem but i found it sat too close to the
radiator. So i ended up coming across a standard Mitsubishi Evo 4 intercooler, it was a bit of a mission
to fit but was a decent size, not going to big and has plenty of room away from the radiator and the
temperature has not yet gone over 34 and that was when it was on a rolling road although I know
they use big fans to keep the temperature down. I'm really happy with it. We'll just have to see if it's
any good for the zetec!
Inlet -
I'm gonna be using the cast zetec inlet off of the 1.6 and 1.8 - i don't know if there is a difference
between the two but i have bought the 1.6 and can't see there being a difference. I'll be using side
feed injectors, i've seen they're making higher flow injectors for these now but you can also use Nissan
ones, not too sure which ones i'll be using yet but think i'll be going for 550cc ones of some sort.
update
Due to help from luke89 i found out that there is a lot of difference between the inlet manifolds so
now i'll be scrapping my 1.6 and going for the RS1800.
sump
I've got the zetec 1.6 sump so i can run the exhaust in the same place as a cvh engine would but
what i'm wondering is there any difference between the 1.6 and 1.8 sumps i.e. capacity

just some info for you on the inlet that could save u some bother ! ,
all the zetec inlets are diffrent
1.6 90ps
1.8 105-150ps
1.8 130ps + rs1800
the rs1800 one has the biggest ports and is also slightly diffrent in shape,
also the rs1800 tb is the same size as a 2.0ltr zetec one ,
i have got a rs1800 one for my zt and one on my 2.0ltr zetec at and theres a lot of diffrent from when it had the 1.6 one on !
not the best pic as its old but you can see the port size diffrents !

ever wonder why no ford can get into the 11s when renault 5s can do it with 260bhp, its call tires, dont buy 888 and think they are amazing because they are track tires not drag tires, get some hoosier or M&T tyres and ur laughing, i guarantee tim could run a high 11 easy with proper tyres

loom
Started on the loom today and finished cutting out what i didn't
need. To be honest it was a lot easier then i thought. Kept
lights, fan, alternator, wiper things like that - and they still work.

Quite a few vauxhall lads in the 11s in fully road legal trim running 888 and similar tyres.

Tim is on stret legal drag radials i.e. The BEST street legal tyres you can possibly get
There are Renault 5s running 11s with street legal tyres too, anything else is cheating imo.
It will be quite a mission to run an 11, but good luck to you. By the way, a Quaife ATB is NOT the best diff to run for drag racing. Far from it in fact.

Colossal Pervert
They're visibly different (even though a lot of morons will argue that ), however I don't have the part number to hand i'm afraid. Post a pic and I can tell you which one it is.

Engine is built now, using Focus RS head gasket, 1.8 Escort Zetec water pump, 1.6 Zetec sump, 2.0 Zetec cams and all performance parts i've mentioned before. Compression ratio worked out to be 8.8.1 lower than the 9.0.1 i was going for. Not sure what the dynamic ratio will be yet.

Engine mount sorted, don't look the prettiest but fits spot on
Exhaust manifold arrived, got from the US. No doubt you have seen and heard about these. I have heard a mixture of views on these, good and bad. The only way to find out is to test it
