love ur ambition etc

But tend to agree with carlo, all the cash u have spent over budget you could have had a 328 and stripped that out.

But i suppose u werent really planning on going over budget at the start!

will still be a lot of fun and hat off to you for all the work you have put it

This is not the place for that discussion - please keep it to PM's - I don't want another thread dragging into the gutter with slander and un-needed arguements. Cheers

Slevin - My budget rose to 2k, and in all fairness, I have not broken that yet, even with a 328 at the cheaper end of the market I would of broken the 2k budget nearly instantly

I'd rather have the 4cyl on 'bodies than a V8 in there personally

With that little 4-pot up front this car is just so, so easy on the limit, you could catch it with your fingertips! Just needs a bit more power and you'd be there!

Tim Harvey won the 1992 BTCC in a 318is, and the cars were much quicker back then

Or you could fit an Eaton M45 supercharger which is SO straightforward on this engine and good for 200bhp no problem. Can pick one up for little more than Ł100 as well

Obviously hadn't read the thread thouroughly enough, lol, it has grown pretty quick, lol

I'd personally still stick with an M42 engine anyway, with a fair bit of lost weight and 200BHP on a budget it would be a very nice track toy

It'll sound nice, but just to my mind it won't be all that fast and it'll handle like a pig!

I just don't see it as a very track car-ish engine

loving the project though

one thing about the rover V8, even though its probably the most underpowered V8 engine ever produced, the grunt they have is very good low down, and they go for ever.

not only the above, but have you seen the prices for extracting 300ft/lb from them ? its peanuts, a full set of pistons for Ł150, yes thats 8 pistons

in std form and comparable to other v8 engines they look poor, the reality is that they are a pretty good reliable unit if you have a good rebuilt engine, a full rebuild is less than Ł500, try getting that from any BMW engine.

oh and BTW that cage was shite but you already know that now

the rover will be just fine weighing in the same as a pinto, will not affect the handling so badly.

At last - someone who sees my sense of the V8 thing - the fact they are easy and mega cheap to work on is always going to be a sure fire winner

Why will it handle like a pig? the RV8 weighs less than the BMW unit I binned

ive had a fair experiance on using the v8 rover, and they will pull the side of a house down, no need for mega revs, horse power is just bollocks.

looking good

Rover V8's are cool - they're not expensive to tune, will run all day and spares are easy to get.

I dont see what peoples issues are really, especially as its Paul's car! lol

Wehey. Update time, and I've been a little bit busy - not just with the car, but with shopping for it - ahh well

First things first - remove the front end of the car and trial fit the engine to get dimensions for making the mounts etc etc. Thankfully the E36 is a bolt together affair Altho the rover gearnob HAS to be binned

Gearlever in perfect place too - no need to get a modified cradle for the LT77

Then with the engine position and stabalised, the mounts were made. I looked at a few ideas for this, but ended up using the standard BMW rubber mounting bushings on the subframe and the standard SD1 metal arm brackets with some box section welded on. Clearance on the steering gear and starter motor is minimal but perfect with no movement when the engine is shoved about to simulate road use The only problem I have is making some form of exhaust manifold that doesn't foul the steering linkage as there is very little room here I have a pair of tubular manifolds from a 4.6 RangeRover P38, but the primaries for 8 and 7 foul the linkage so I need to have a long think and come up with some ideas to solve this problem.

And a couple of snaps of them both fitted in place

Just as I finished putting that little lot together and letting the engine sit naturally, the postie brought me lovely things.

Wasted Spark EDIS-8 kit

Goegeus Roose Motorsport Silicone Hoses to do all my coolant and air intake

Jetex also sent me my intermediate silencers aswell, forgot to take a picture of these tho

And the engine sat nicely in its new home (for the moment anyway, I have a 6 padel clutch on the way )

That is all for today while I make a start on building my wiring loom

Tell me about it, its pissing down

I can't really do anymore on the engine bay untill my clutch arrives, then the SD1 engine will come out and the Discovery engine (unleaded heads and slightly better flowing over the SD1) will be slotted in.

Not sure I would have picked that engine, but what a cool project

I bought this donor for my V8 project, 4.0 256bhp standard, for 600 quid, and will get nearly all that back from scrapping it and selling some bits off of it.

Fair play Chipper - one of the main reasons I chose the RV8 is the quantity of parts for them is obscene and they are very cheap, the others, as I said earlier, easy to work on, and I have an idea about their internals etc
