LHD MK3 Escort Turbo - SiTech ST170 2.0 ZVH
Day one
As it sits now....... It's been mine for 7 years with myself being the only UK owner on the V5 since it came over from the Netherlands.
Now it's looking pretty rough with everything being worn out, broken or not up to spec...... but the main thing is it's a damn good shell with all original panels which is bloody hard to find these days (rocking horse shit in wet 'n' salty Scotland too!)
Respray, new bumpers, new wheels, de-chromed etc etc etc will happen eventually....... or I could just run it rat look for a while
All this will get ripped out for the new build.
Initially it was going to be a 1900, then 1600 CVH, now its definately a 2.0 ZVH using an ST170 bottom end and standalone management that's heading to the bay soon.
Quite a few trick features going to be used in it with a high revving 8 valve 300 BHP motor being the result.... with a good bit of help from SiTech Racing
To be honest I much prefer sitting over this side! Plenty to be done in here too....
And thankfully no cracked dash to deal with
Also it will now be in Fast Ford magazine's staff project section following its progress.........which is giving me an ongoing kick up the arse for me to get busy with it
My first page is in this month's with pix and an intro story of the history of the car, next issue the engine build commences!
It's probably only out for about another week, so if you wanna see it grab a peek soon

Also got an odd 'Tirol' metal badge that was on it, see them on quite a few old euro Fords, maybe a dealer thing but not sure...

S'pose I really should update this!
Well I've bought a few goodies for the Mk3, and got SiTech Racing building me a nice ST170 based ZVH
First off is a top spec Newman cam and solid lifters...
Everyone swears by them so gotta be worth a go.
Recently shelled out on a nice new GT28 0.63 from AET..... first proper turbo I've ever owned, I'm a bit more used to ropey old RST T3s
This particular version of the GT28 is good for 400BHP, even though I'm going for 300+ its nice to have a bit of headroom and future potential
I requested an internal wastegate too.... ca't be arsed with the hassle of a screamer pipe potentially getting me not allowed on track or raped by the traffic cops etc....
The engine itself.....
2.0 ZVH, ST170 bottom end, rebuilt to pretty much standard spec (forged rods and pistons) with some proper heavy duty bearings for high revving durability, as it's going to be redlining at 8000RPM.
Yes it's got a CVH head! I'm not a fan of jumping on the 'newer is automatically better' bandwagon, especially when hearing stories of Zetec heads lifting and cracking at high power. I might not be running enough power to worry, but it'll be getting plenty miles and plenty abuse so the stronger 8 valve head which consists of more metal should be better for strength and heat dissipation.
The head's been well ported too, and one of SiTech's custom compression lowering gaskets will be used too.... but not to go too low, it'll be in the low 8's.
300BHP is the minimum goal..... and then it'll get more either in that spec or another when I get bored.
Been re-assembling the car recently too. I had a look at the S2 RST brakes and Boge shocks & springs but they don't fill me with great confidence though, really should be sourcing some better gear I think....

Its nice to see that mk3 getting a nice engine Just one little Q tho. How long did you take to make those pics? I mean they look like you used the flash set every time
#15
They don't take long at all
Just a couple of remote flash lights for some proper lighting.... it is my job after all and they were to be used in Fast Ford, so gotta look nice

A mate of mine had a Tirol badge on another old euro imported Ford years ago..... nobody really had a clue what it was and the best guess was that it was a dealer badge similar to the 'Trust Ford' ones we got here...

almost the same spec as yours will be but with a few sitech goodies
#36
Nik, been too busy doing all sorts including buying an XR2 today to be doing that!
Look forward to seeing how the van is coming along....
Intresting.... Conficts with info I've been told before too.
Also been told of Stock ST170 engines doing 300BHP with a bolt on turbo conversion.... wouldn't think that would be possible with cast pistons

I doubt Mahle supply a forged piston for any production car? (excluding real exotica perhaps).. YB's use cast pistons, and they're good for 500bhp or more! Same applies to C20LET pistons, yet to be broken (when used properly)!
I don't condone bolt-on conversions though, especially those backed up by yank 'mustang' dyno figures

its the truth unfortunately! i asked Mahle themselves. any forged piston has a 'P' in the number, the ST170 pistons have a 'v' iirc.
pa_sjo - cossies are forged, as are some XE's, jonnybravo has also spoken to mahle about that.

Hmmmmm......... How can some people be running 300+ on these pistons then?
