Default 2003 Mondeo ST220

Not a blue one Had a good clean up today and nipped down the road for a few shots, done with a Canon SX-200IS which is a pretty decent P+S camera to be fair.

If being really economical is one of your priorities, then a TDCi is great but its not the real deal in my mind, just a jazzed up Mondeo that was added to the range to suit company car tax bands, they also have tons of problems in comparison to a V6, plus they dont sound like this..

I have a 2006 one as a work car and I love. It's obviously not cossie fast but still a respectable performance and sounds great. Awful on fuel though - have to fill up every other day at 16mpg.

You must be on the redline all the time, i never see mine that low and i reset the trip every fill up, even thrashed it never goes below 22mpg and 30+mpg is easy on a run, its much better than i expected.

I've had the car just over a year now and i love it, i'll be hanging onto it for a long time.

Looks really nice. I'm on the look out for an ST TDCi at the moment but people want silly money for them. The ST220 are at least 2 grand cheaper and come with recaros. I'm considering getting 220 instead as the 2 or 3 grand I'll save on the price cam pay for the extra fuel!

Disagree, i love em, the fact that so few came with them from the factory makes it that little bit more unique.

Now is the time to buy, whilst they aint as good as a diesel on fuel, they are not appalling as people make out, over 500 miles i'm getting 27mpg and that included the Pod runs, normal driving i always see 30+, if it was a city use car i'm sure it would be pretty bad!

Quite a few things have changed in just over a year!

Very much a motorsport weekend, went to Pod on Saturday and then Fordfair on Sunday, never been on the track before, my Matators are great road tyres but overheated after the first lap! Rest of the car performed brilliantly though.

Never had one issue with mine.

Edit: preferred it standard, don like the new wheels or boy racer vent in the bumper.

Thats fine, your only the 2nd person to say that since I put the wheels on! Better than the RS replicas IMO, and the vent on the NS is functional with the filter in the bumper which is the main reason why I fitted them, to allow more air into the recess and hot air out.

The wheels were originally intended to be track wheels only but they turned out so well after blasting and coating that I kept them on for general use, personally I love them, and the original wheels too.

Its had quite a few things done recently which the pictures dont show. By far the best thing is this -

The JP exhaust replaces the Milltek, and although I miss the noise its really pulled the bottom and mid range up and smoothed the power curve out, thanks to longer individual pipes. Its a shame its so quiet but the note is awesome, it fitted perfectly and I cant help but think I should of got one in the first place, for it to have made a noticeable difference in driveability shows how good it is.

Compare the layout of the Milltek to the JP -

And then the JP fitted (not my car)

There is only one 90 degree turn in the JP, the pipe size is better matched with 2x 2 inch pipes leading to a 2.5, this has really helped the torque. Its less boomy aswell.

Other changes, I've fitted my OE but modded airbox back on and again noticed an improvement, even this time of year! So no more induction kit for me, twin 60mm feeds to the airbox and a BMC panel filter do the job just fine, and looking back at my time slips of which there are many, proves it was quicker with the airbox!

Also fitted NGK Iridium plugs, improved the breather system, fitted a beefier diesel gearbox mount, powerflex mounts for the exhaust, new rear discs and pads, and some Michelin PS3 boots for the front.

Oh, and sourced a 82c thermostat from the states with Motul Mocool to keep the temps under check, as they do like to run on the hot side. All the little things add up so I'm hoping for better RR and Pod results this year.

Try looking at the instantaneous when your thrashing it, mine dropped to 8!!
Obviously the 6 speed 04 onwards are better on fuel, but not as quick in take off.

Lovely cars, I'd definately get another, mine was a late 03 5 speed in black with red leather$

The 3.0 v6 is miles apart from the 2.5 shite, very rev happy and power all the way through the rev range without the crank pulley or water pump problems aswell.

Looks like a cracking example you've got aswell

Well my transit drops to mid 15 mpg when flat out! People always moan about the mpg on these but I've always got over 30mpg on decent runs, normally 33-34 in warmer weather and recently its not gone below 28 mpg in mixed driving. I think the gearing is perfect, 3rd gear is quite close to 2nd and acceleration is brisk , mid 14's is not shabby for a car of this size! Plus i love the long legged 6th gear, basically an overdrive.

Its now 3 years since I got it and I still look for excuses to drive it! Prices are rock bottom, so much so that I might buy a 220 estate this year!

As a family car with good dynamics, good performance and refinement I think I would struggle to find a car to match it for the money.
