chin up mate - weve all had times when working on cars when somethings failed we knew we should have checked when we was last nearby, after coming so far dont let a slipping clutch stop you from failing! 99% of the people would have given up the ghost when the engine fire occured, and surely this is a bigger advertisement than anything for your restoration business?

Looking at it purely from a marketing perspective, you have turned around a burnt out car into a great example of the marquee in just 2 months! I know where my car would be coming if I had the money simply for this fact alone! Whats even better is you have this documented and providing the right mag features happen, it could become as famous as the Reyland Escort, or MA Developments White Top Speed Cossie (MADRods) within the ford scene! This would effectively pay for the restoration and rerestoration 10 times indirectly, where as selling the car this close to the end would almost seam like you have failed! I know in my mind what you have done is awesome, however in my mind it would seam like that car restorer I am taking my car to did not finish that car because he got disillusioned about a small problem after he overcome all the other problems!

Just get it finished - the rate you work it will only be another few hours and it will be ready for a MOT!

Lee, get the 16i done mate....I know she's a sore point for you and you have a million and one things going on but I think you'd regret not getting it finished, if not now then later. I can say most people would have thrown in the towel AGES ago, but look at the list of cars you have done so far...VW, Aston, Escos etc......surely the 16i is not going to get one over on you????? I'm sure you feel like and parking the landy on the bonnet would be stress relieving but 10 minutes later you would start repairing the damage inflicted to her again.....Lol.
I look forward to see what other resto threads you have coming soon.....the Moonstone project especially.....

Regards as always Stebbo

i know how you feel fella, i bought my orion (mk1) as a 'project' and have thrown 2k at it in parts and little tit bits, I got to a point where everytime i fixed one thing, another fucked up ! the latest problem on mine is the sump bolts - all the bloody holes are in need of retapping, i only found this out after the sump gasket decided it didn't want to do it's job any more !! Still, the way i look at it is, i've thrown this much money at it, i'll never get that back so i'll get her finished, enjoy her for a while ( after i've spent another gawd know's how much on getting spray work done ) and then maybe in a couple of years either sell her on and get something else - or i'll strip her out, do something insane with the engine and track slag it !! pretty much every other comment on my resto thread on the orionregister is "fucking car is pissing me off" or "i've had enough of spending on this poxy car"

Trouble is, after a few days i think, fuck it, i've come this far, put in all the effort myself.. why stop now ? !

Made a list this morning of all the things i wanted to get done today.

Have done 80% of them

Side lights

Headlights

Interior boot

Washer bottle won on ebay last week, paid stupid money for it, but they are like rocking horse shite.

Refinished

Fitted

Had some new plates made up

Decided to get front and back, even tho it was only the front which melted to nothing. As i didnt like the spacing. Im told its quite a valuable plate, due to it spelling the Asian name Azif?

Anyway got newones

MArking

Fitting

fitted the vin plates, decided to keep the originals rather than get new shiny ones

Gave the suspension a once over to check it was all tight and ready for mot

Well I didnt sleep much last night due to stewing on the car, thought long and hard about the clutch, and then as if but magic came up with a theory. THe clutch cable was a bastart to fit, soooo tight. maybe it was too tight there fore not relaesing the thrust bearing fully.
Sure enough this was the case. just had to manipulate the lever to slacken the cable buy about 1/4"

Air tools dont you love them.....
Bleeding the brakes

My favorite as it makes me feel like an F1 mechanic

So today ive sorted out/ticked off list

-All the lights which come under MOT scruitiny.
-Adjusted and movee exhaust to fit properly
-Fixed fuel and brake line clips
-Replaces bushes on crossover bow behind glove box, as there was far too much play in the peadl. Man this is a bastart to change, had to pull out lower dash and heater materix and coolant water just to get to it
-Horn
-Washer bottle and jets
-Wipers
-Numberplates
-Fixed oil cap on rocker cover
-Aligened front wheel toe in/out
-Bleed brakes
-Checked tyre pressures
-Adjusted handbrake
-vin plates

Not that much, well not as much as id have wanted to get done today.

And here we are tonight.............. Its running rough still as all of the vacum pipes are blanked off, so running rich and missing a bit. But Its moving under its own steam

What I could do with is a fellow 16i owner or expert to help set up the engine, as I have no idea where the vacum pipes go or what im still missing- the beauty of buying a car from an shell and boxes of bits
As the ignition is all mechanically controled buy the twin coil and ecu circuit, im a bit miffed as to where to start? As many 16i owners know the twin coil set up is a bit of a black art!

Im still not decided yet on the fate of the project, need to get very drunk over the weekend and decide what to do, I really am at the end of the road the enthuasiam went the day it went up in smoke

I know mate, I sound like such a moaning cnut. I just wish I knew someone that could come look at the engine and say this pipe goes here and this here and you need to adjust this and this fuel screw,,, and look she runs sweet.

If I had someone that could do that then all would be fine, Ive never been a fan of the early 80's injection systems, they always seem to be more complicated then they need to be.

I can rebuild a cosworth engine and hell as you know even as aston. But this 16i really is stumping me. If id have bought the car complete and stripped it my self id never have this problem. Its the simple fact it dont know what im now missing and where these bits go.connect to and how to make the engine run smoothly.

My new toy turned up tonight, my 1967 beetle, nice simple. Im not sure if its a good thing tho as im itching to start the bug.

While i was waitng earlier i tried to get some sun set shots, i gotta say even for a car i now cant stand she does look soooo sexy.

Oit, less of the reverse psychology

Yeh. Problem is im not one for letting things sit around.

Ive built loads of car from "boxes" the series one was a walk in the park compared to this.

The 16i managment is just soooo backwards, as its all a pre set ecu mechanical ignition there is nothing you can do to tweek it. I can see why so many users went back to the tried and tested coil and dizzy!!!!!!

Ive contacted a well known mk3 engine tuner/builder, asked him if he can "show me the way", all I want is for someone to get it running smooth with all the vacum pipes in the right place, and supply the missing bits like elbows and the air valve/balances thingy.

Sounds simple enough, but as you know unless you "know" the cars its a nightmare, Id never even seen a 16i up close before buying this one.

All of them, they are all buynged up with almagating tape at the mo, so i could create enough pull for the metering flap to open.

Only one connected is the pendulum to the ecu.

The just seem to be far too many inlets on the manifold, and apart from the rocker cover breather, im cluless as to where they go.

Doesnt seemt to be any info, not even the workshop manual show this. and its just toooo difficult to find pics on detail on the net.

Also cant seemt to find any info on the idle screw on the throttle body and the fuel screw on the meter head.

If i can get this sorted its ready for MOT.

You got one that goes from rocker to inlet, one that goes from ECU to inlet, one goes from inlet to fuel shut off device.
Other outputs on inlet/throttle body are from aux air device and servo.

Right well the fuel shut off device i lost in the fire, so need to source one of these

The aux air I do have, but cant see where it mounts. Ill take a pic tommrow just to see that we are on the same track.

Ive spoken to jano at oddkidd, he said if im really stuck he will set the car up for a good rate if its still running rough after ive sorted the pipes.

I have too much to do

Ok heres some pics, and what I think things are???

Big one goes to back of meter unit
Small one goes ?

front hole on meter unit goes to fuel shut off??

Hole on dome pipe goes also to fuel shut off?

One with screw driver in is from rocker cover, goes to metet unit and air shut off?

Big one to servo?
Small to ecu?

to air aux device?

ok first things:

Aux air device

Right,

Under inlet manifold is a 3 way adaptor or whatever it is called lol
Small pipe from rear of rocker cover, which shoud be black with red stripe, goes to the adaptor.
The other small outlet on adaptor goes to the fule shut off.
The bottom larger outlet on adaptor goes to servo.

On the throttle body, beneath, are two outlets one small one large. Small to ecu, large to inlet of aux are device(right side as you look at engine). The outlet of aux air device(left as you look at bay) U bends up to the inlet manifold.

At the airbox, the rocker breather attaches to a male union that you have missing from your airbox, you currently just have a hole. Yours has broke off, mine had, i epoxied mine back on, then fixed breather pipe to it as normal.
Front of airbox, male union, goes to fuel shut off. See pic below for better description, beware, as i had put the shut off in the wrong way round for this pic, but it is irrelevant really for this.

The16i is taking a bit of a back seat, while I source some parts, also give me some time to calm down and like the car again

Right. this is what I believe to be the AUX air device?

Am I correct?

You know what's arriving soon Lee, put the 16i on the back burner (no pun intended) keep looking for the bits you need and before you know it she'll be sorted. Have a bit of fun with it then make the decision of keeping it or getting rid. You've also got the VDub to get your teeth in to...see you soon.
