Sigma 10-20MM wide angle is really fun.

Canon 50MM F1.8 is really nice (not sure if u can get a sigma/tameron equivelent) really good for low light.
something like a sgma 70mm-300mm Apo zoom for motorsport/sport maybe

I'd seriously recommend the standard Nikon 18-55mm VR kit lens as your first buy, its a reasonably cheap lens (around 100 quid on ebay) which is pretty good quality and versatile.
Get that one first and then once you've used it a bit you can decide what kind of photography you want to do, which will make lens selection a lot easier.

Mmm, this is why I bought a D80 body and use the two lenses I had previously with my F65.
Red16 or anyone in the know... would the 18-55 VR lens fit my D80? - ie would it matter that there would be a M/A button on the lens as well as the body of the camera?

A nikon d80 is 10.2 megapixel? right, (correct me if im wrong) which you can probably get on a modile phone these days. The thing that makes a difference is the quality of the lens, and as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.
In my experience Nikkor lens's are the ones to have. However, if your looking for a 70-300 be prepared to be paying Ł250+ :s

You are correct in saying a lens will make a massive difference to any camera but your quote about the mobile phone is wrong. There is a huge difference between 10 mega pixies on a phone and the same on a full frame digital slr.

I have the sigma 70-300, its ideal for motorsport and street photography ect.
People will say you need a lower F number for motorsport, but to get a really low F zoom its alot of money, you will be really happy with the results you can get from the sigma 70-300 APO.

all of the motorsport ones were taken with that sigma zoom lense.
