Default DSLR Filters

Right i know i should really get at least a circular polarising filter to reduce reflection etc in my pics, but is there any other filter that would come in very useful? Ive noticed a lot of multi filter kits on ebay, no specific makes for around £30. Are they a case of you get what you pay for or are they all pretty much the same considering im not using a 2k camera?

Just after some general advice really, getting into the scenery shots now, ive noticed that the macro filters seem quite popular, are they any good as obviously a new macro lens isnt going to be cheap

thanks

Sarah

Forget cheap equipment. It's the same as it's for the cars... You won't be happy with it...

Only useful filters are grey filters for long time shots and something we call "Verlaufsfilter". It's a piece of glass which is grey on one side and has no colour on the other side. It's used to lighten up parts of the picture, e.g. when you take a picture of a dark valley while the sun is shining on the mountains above.

As you already know Sarah, i've just bought a set of budget graduated and solid filters, so when they arrive i'll be doing a test on them to see how they fair, might start a thread of my own or just hijack this one if you dont mind

filter holder, adaptor from lens to filter holder and the following filters

1. ND2
2. ND4
3. ND8
4. graduated blue
5. graduated brown
6. graduated red
7. graduated green
8. graduated orange
9. graduated yellow
10. graduated grey (ND4)

Reason i went for this kit was the fact that i couldnt justify spending the cost of my lens again on a filter kit, that said i did buy a Hoya Pro1 Circular Polarizer as my first filter. If these new filters are shite then i will upgrade them as and when i see fit.

no point putting a cheap crap filter in front of your decent lens! i would rarther not bother than turn your lens sub standard. hoya pro`s! not cheap but quality bits of glass.

I bought a decent uv and polarising filter, and then some cheap ones for doing macro shots. I picked up a +4 and +10 filter, they were about £3.50 each, and they are fantastic!
Yes, a more expensive filter would be better, but i can't justify spending £40 on a filter.
At the end of the day, if you spend a couple of pound on a filter, use it a few times and find its no good, its hardly broke the bank.

DaveZS - that was my thinking with this kit ive just bought, i couldnt justify spending 100 quid on a kit to use with an 80 quid lens! Plus would i actually notice the difference by using the better kit with my basic lens?

I done a quick google search and i think you may need to install a couple of updates in order to get your raw files to open in Elements 6, they are available here

Not sure how to add borders in Photoshop but its a doddle using flickr
