I even dared to use the manual focus on my 70-200 so I could focus where I wanted.

Cheers for the help. I am still thinking of a new camera...lol

I am also learning but getting a little more ambitious.

It was set at f9 ISO 800(may explain blurryness) and shutter of 1/2000

the ISO might have been a bit high causing a bit too much noise? Think its easier to use a lower ISO then adjust it afterwards in photoshop, but if its a bit dark your better off with a higher ISO anyway. I tend to stick to 1-200 tbh and adjust afterwards

I forgot to change the iso so thats my fault but I tried to use the fast shutter speed to stop shake as I was not using a tripod. It was a bit of a hurry as the sun was risin quick.... lol

I will dig out the tripod to try later.

Cheers all this is interesting

ISO 100:Great for bright sunny days, at the beach or on the snow. Produces clean images that are great for enlargements.

ISO 200:Great for overcast daylight pictures (noise levels may increase, but in most cases not noticeably)

ISO 400:Great for lower lighting conditions (indoors, night time) or when you need to capture faster moving subjects in lower lighting conditions

dont know how useful any higher ISO numbers are tbh....

If it was on automatic, the higher the ISO the faster the shutter speed IIRC so that might also have been another reason for it being so fast

ISO numbers are only applicable to the particular camera. Something like a Nikon D3, for example, can get exceptional results at ISO1600+ than on a lesser camera will look terrible.

The quality gear is bloody expensive, but entry level stuff like most people posting on here are using you should budget about 500 quid to get your starter kit, which imo should include a camera and lens obviously, SD memory card, tripod, remote/wireless shutter release, circular polarising filter, lens cleaner brush/pen, and a decent bag to carry the kit around in.

Taz The first 2 photos of the beach/sea are a bit grey and boring tbh, but the sunset ones are a different kettle of fish, the last sunset through the trees is a quality shot

The reason for your shutter speed being so high (1/2000) was the fact the ISO was so high (800), it was trying to counteract the cameras sensor being so reactive to light by letting a very small amount of light into the camera.

As a genral rule for hand held shooting, use 1/lenslength so if you had a 300mm lens on your camera you should use a shutter speed of at least 1/300.

Try and use as low an ISO as possible, only increase the ISO when it is preventing you having the aperture and shutter speeds set the way you want them to get the photo you want to take.

danneth really like the composition of the bridge shot, just a shame it was so foggy, would've been fantastic if the sky was full of colour n clouds. Where you been to take them, there's shedloads of frost on the branches

Would've taken more of the pier/lighthouse but i was wary of being stranded as the tide was coming in and i had to climb around the gates to get onto the pier

danneth - cheers

leecavturbo - cheers... the dragons a stroppy sod when he wants to be
Photography is quite expensive but worth it imo.

pa sjo - you big bairn!

As you know i've recently bough a set of budget graduated filters similar to the Cokin P branded ones, finally got round to using them today, but not as extensively as i'd have liked to to th tide coming in when i was on the pier!

anyway, the image below was taken using no filters

this one was taken using a light sunset graduated filter, i couldve lowered the filter a bit more i think to give the photo more of a sunset tone.

this one was taken using an orange graduated filter

Went out today for a wander about our local national trust place, took a few pics but I think this was the best of the bunch for today, wasnt impressed overall with the pics as a whole

Taken using Canon 450D and 70-200mm Lens, I need to improve my picture taking to get better colour definition, it was a grey day but they seem to lack colour

absolutly amazing thread guys!!!

Red, very impressed mate. you certainly have the nack!

I too have had a Nikon D60 for crimbo, and even though i've bought a book on the D60, and have read up bits and bobs, its still such a mind boggling thing this camera lark!

Red16, what setting do you use on the round dial on the top? P, S, A, M? and if you use more than one regually, which do you use for which?

I'm iching to get so any pics, but need a good push in the correct direction! Basicly, i need some one on one tuition!

escortrst90 - Thanks

dvid - Canny pic that, its hard to catch wildlife as they dont tend to sit in the same place for long. I've found that if the lighting is poor the colours tend to be a bit faint, just boost the colour saturation a little bit in photoshop.

Dunc Maclean - Cheers mate... pm sent

I've not seen that link before danneth, i'll have a read of it
