the "RAT" look
#202
I like the rat look on certain cars, but like anything else, there are those that can do it and those that make a tit job of it.
For me a rat look is a look that has come about over time, bit by bit parts rusted, fell off, got botched got added. Something interesting with lots of little features.
Some of the old beetles look cool and look like they have been lived in and have never had a penny spent on them or a car in the world given to their astetcis, just made to keep on rolling.
Not really a fan of those that stick an unpainted rusting bonnet on a modern car to be honest.

not sure where to draw the line on it I can just tell the difference btween intentional rat and a general tatty shitty car

dident the "rat look" originally start out in america with "the good ol boys" tuning the fuck out of engines in there rusty old classics which was genuine rats and rot box's and just raced them? so surely the "rat look" should be continued onwards youve got a shit looking car but oh look its got a tiny slow engine ??? put a big ass engine in and do it properly how the rat STYLE should be done!

All i can say everyones different, i love all cars. It would be a boring world if we all looked the same and drove the same cars!
Different people need different cars depending on their circumstances, i needed a car with a roof rack, the only 'look' that roof rack fitted was 'rat'. People have already said that mine isnt a ful-on rat, but the kind of people you find on rat-look.com appreciate the work and the look ive achived at such a minimal cost!
I went to a Fast Car event in Harlow yesterday in my Escort, must say i was pleased with the response that i got from everyone even the Police , it was all fun, and that highlights the rat-look theory.
Thankfuly i got some post saturday morning which was all stickers, so the Escort isnt so bland now. As it looks now:

You're completely right. Older cars, rusting... It's completely unique and there's nothing normal about it. Damn, at least you are doing something with these cars instead of letting them get old and rus... Oh wait. My Dad had a rat look Orion years ago, and he didn't even know it. What he thought was an MOT failure, turned out to be a trend setter.

The Ford scene is very similar I would say. A load of rusty old Ford's all parked up. Only most of them aren't on purpose, it's just the way old Ford's go.

I'm only pulling your leg mate. I don't like the rat look, but I agree it's unique in it's own way. Yeah, most Cosworths are the same but there isn't much you can do without ruining them in my opinion.

i didnt over do my mk2 polo breadvan on a rat look, well the old owner had it like that, but i didnt mind it! i'll get a pic up in a minute, some will hate it, others will like it, but at the time, it wasnt too bad and main thing was it was a cheap runner when i was paid off from work at the time!

I don't see how I'm being a keyboard warrior?!
I only asked as you didn't seem to answer the question. I'm only curious as to what is the definitive difference? your answer was very vague.
no need to get shirty because you have read and replied to the same post twice

Thanks mate
Ive got some more stickers on there way and ive put someone on the rear screen so shes getting there. just been focusing on the interior at the mo.
all ive done is taken a boring escort, done some rather cheep modding and now im loving it! Had some really good response from the everyday person, even went down wel at cruise at the weekend.
Just a quickie to all, i was going to post a topic in the introductions forum, maybe even the project one, sorry i havent got a turbo, its a very low budget project and my cars one of a kind, am i welcome or not?

I love most rat look cars. Some people take it too far though, or just don't know what they are doing. It's important to stick with a theme, in the same way you'd stick to Euro mods if making a Euro look car. It's also important to consider a car's future value - if you have a car becoming increasingly rare, it's probably a bad idea to completely rust it...

Dont get the rat look at all! Think the Germans are taking the piss a lil, as ford owner I think I can say for all of us that we'd all love our fords to have the skill of non rusting like VWs! but there modding owners well go out and make something on their cars rusty!
Think the only time rat look works is if the car can go like a rat up a drain pipe! I.e Royal Nails!

What sort of moron does this?
Are you sure its intentional and not just an unpainted bonnet?
Surely if it were intentional you'd at least try and make the rest of the car match. Mint car with rat bonnet just doesnt work..
On a lighter note, I used to have a rat look beetle and rat look minor.
Both were 'rat look' by default, not choice.

That's my mates denvers fez it was wrote off a year or two ago, it looked epic 140mm drop, rh cups 17x9.5", st interior, Rockford fosgate sound system, smoothed in spliter kit, Denver spent thousands on it it kicked off alot of new threads in Ireland, it was a very important car
and btw the standard bonnet was kept, he bought a new bonnet to rust
