Recently had my car remapped and a decat fitted, my insurance is due for renewal in just under a month, I have no problem advising potential insurers that it's been remapped and has a few other little mods but do I tell them about the decat or will they just refuse to quote due to the fact that they are not legal for road use?
What do others do regarding their decats and insurance?

 

They won't insure it for use in the road with a decat as it's a legal requirement.

When I had the ST I didn't declare it. My plan was to remove it and leave the missing pipe work and blag it must of been stolen.

But I had a claim when someone hit me and my car was never checked for any mods before repair work was done.

 

Just declare "exhaust system changes".

 

at end of the day your trying to scam your insurer but not declaring it and in some cases void a MOT due to emissions failure, many 1000s do it but if your caught out then you will only have yourself to blame

 

I'd just like to politely say that an MOT cannot be voided after it has been issued. My brother had a Discovery sold to him which he later found out that it was a dodgy MOT and had VOSA look at it. VOSA told him that his MOT wasn't worth the paper it was on however they cannot cancel it! They just advise you to get the work done to make the car road worthy and reprimand the testing station it was carried out along with the tester.

The insurance on the other hand will do anything to get out of paying up, so all your doing is giving them ammunition to refuse to pay out! It's down to you and if you want to risk it.

 

ask them for a quote with and without the decat and go from there

as long as it's "legal" you won't have any comebacks for it

 

I got insured on a Decat pipe on my old vRS. Depends which insurance company.

 

My insurance covered a decat but I have since fitted a sports cat so no need to worry now

 

Just get a free flowing sports cat.

insurance companies are cunts and as the industry continues to try and cut costs due to crash scammers and the uninsured, you bet thier bottom dollar that they will be finding more and more obscure reasons not to pay out or to reduce available cover to make the insurance worthless.

look whats happened to winsdcreen cover, wasnt massively abused, but seen an easy target to save cash.

Look at "agreed values" policies dissapearing from many mainstream companies and now mostly only with specialist brokers and companies. isnt due to massive poor claims histories on "agreed value" policies, but just another product they can bin to save costs.

Theyve got us by the short and curlies so unfortunately you have to play the game or you will come out worse off.

 

They're wanting black boxes to be law ain't they.

I'm going to get a dash cam fitted front and rear to the car and another for work.

Just to cover my own arse as it's a bit sore getting raped on the cost of my insurance.

personally i dont see what harm the decat does, but it is illegal and it is down to the car owner or policy holder to make sure the car remains road worthy . ive heard of insurers saying that its covered but you cant insure something that isnt legal im afraid

 

Hi mate, thanks for your reply to my thread. I'm assuming that you work for an insurance company, if I approached your company for a quotation and declared the mods to my car including a decat would you automatically decline to quote or refuse to insure me?

 

no usually what i would do is advice you that we cannot cover a car that has a decat . but if the customer advises me that he or she will replace it with a cat or sport cat then id be able to quote(due to call recordings) . but if you had an accident and the engineer found you had a decat the underwriters would be well within there rights to not pay out .
