Default how hard is it to find a decent transit

im looking for a decent transit and i have 5k to spend.can i hell find anything worth that new or old.every 1 has done starship miles and has more battle scars than ben hurs horse or its needing an engine and/or welding.i cant believe that every 1 of the ten i viewed and the 100+ i have looked at on auto trader are not any use.the best 1 i looked at was owned by pikeys, needed a sill and a rear x member and an engine.nut the main parts of the body you could see were excellent.the pump had leaked filling the sump with diesel and when it got to a certain level it filled the clylinders with diesel then revved till it either ran out or was conked out.you would think in this recession there would be loads of vans going about!

The private residential sector is still going strong mate, so vans are still thin on the ground, or at least good ones. I'm a builder and I have never owned a transit because there just aren't any worth owning!! I have a MK6 escort 55, and I paid £650 for it, just been re sprayed, 12 months tax and test, not a bit of rust, and one ding on the drivers side door, roof rack and tow bar. I just have an 8x4 trailer to haul all the stuff around.

A friend of mine bought his from Germany, it was mint!! 56K on a 95 (i think) and it was as out of the factory, really well looked after, but german builders are super anal, so you'll always find good commercial vehicles over there.

yeah,im a plumber and i need someting 3m long in the back.i like to carry a lot of fittings, pipe and things you only need once so when you go to a job you shouldnt have to run around to get materials so that makes an escort no use to me due to size.i would have 1 in a minute if that wasnt the case as i love mk6/7 escort vans.

I know what your saying mate, but to be honest, I do have to run around for plumbing if we're doing an extension. I just have a galvanised tube that I got made up from a duct work company and it fits a full roll of 15mm in it, and the box trailer fits more than you'd imagine with some clever stacking, and the trailer is all sign written and can be left on the pavement at jobs etc, it's a good little set up.

I know it's a ball ache, but I bless the day I sold my transit and got this little set up, a few twiddles of a spanner and the racks off, the tow bar is quick release, and the trailer sits on the drive, then I've got my weekend car ready to go!! I'm building up a zetec turbo for it now actually, I'll never sell it, best thing I've bought in ages.

i do a lot of heating jobs and an escort would need to be stacked to the roof or do 2 runs for everything.hopefully something will turn up.looked at a perfect van today, right size, colour spec but it was needing paint, exhaust, brakes and some tlc,52 plate executive at 4k.very very strong money as it was more like 2.5k.wasnt cheeky as he said firmy there would be no haggling so i just said no thanks and walked away!

I work for a Ford dealers on the commercials and Transits seem to last a few years then rot to bits...you should see the state of them coming back in as part exchanges. You get the odd decent one but most are wrecks with scabs all over and shagged interior trim

the ones owned by pikeys are usually in better nick because they get in at night and strip the shit out of the ones in our compound...a few times got into work to see a shell were a transit used to be

does it have to be a transit? theres some excellent vans out there now.i have mates who have had transits and they say they are prone to the diesel pumps going and can cost well over a grand to sort out.
