Good video. All three motors looked the business even if they don't rate the cossie much these days.

To be fair it was in front until 120mph and that may well have been a standard car. Even if you are a boy racer and want to race from the lights there ain't many places in town you're going to get up to that type of speed.

It took the Mk1 up to 120mph to pass the Escort. So i'm wondering what time it took the Mk2 to pass it.

I think a good test would be the GGR305 Conversion on a Small Turbo Escort against the MK2 RS. I think the Focus will struggle to pass it.

Not saying the Focus is a bad car as i love it. Once finances are right, everything for the GF and our planned child is set, i'll be saying Hello to a MK2 lol

Cossies are GREAT. But tuning them to a reliable high figures is a no no. Very few out there.

escort cosworth is now 17 years old and it uses technology from 1989!! That makes it 20! Look at your plasma and LCD tv's and then remember the big tv's from 1989!!! You can't compare as technology obviously moves on. Imagine if Ford had done with the escort what Mitsubishi done with it's EVO's and have new variants every couple of years!!!! We would have the Escort RS Cosworth Evolution 10, CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT TYPE OF CAR THAT WOULD BE!! 20 Years of development into the YB engine etc etc etc!!

I'm under no disalution that my escos drives like shit compared to the new FRS as i've been in Jamie's (Mels, lol) from Jamsports but he escort is just so awesome to look at and if modified the right way they will annialate most things under 400 hp.!!

All imo of course!! LOL

Could this not also be turned the other way hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 300bhp vs the 212 of the mk1 and the 224 of the escort . It is after all the newer more powerful car you would expect it to perform better.

Now while beauty is in the eye of the beholder compared to the escort and the mk1 the mk2 is just plain fugly. Who ever signed off on those bonnet vents should be taken out back and shot. Still the mk2 engine should fit in the mk1, have the looks and the power then

it does perform better then them both

and you could only say that if they were the same weight but one is fully loaded with goodies and looks a pleasure to sit in the other two well

Always amazes me these presenters pointing out these things, a bloody two year old knows years and years of development do actually count for something, why not compare the new FRS after a de tune so they are all on the same power.
Real world conditions will see everytime the escos kill the other two, ie traffic light grand prix's, and the pleasure of giving an ass whooping to a newer car is good.

I'm pretty sure if the Escort Cossie had had the same power as the Mk2 RS it would have been off the line quicker and never seen again, something with more BHP will always win if the road is long enough, bit pointless race if you are going to run them and say well the Mk2 won once we'd got it up to 120 mph!!

yes, but who races from a standing start with a full bore launch? 30mph coming off a roundabout, onto a slip road, or pretty much ANYWHERE in the real world and the focus will hammer the cos.

30mph off an roundabout i'll take the Escort Please!!
On a slip road already moving the car with the greater BHP will win.
You can't race cars with 80 BHP difference and call it a fair race, although to ever have a fair comparison of a cars abilitys they need to have equal BHP the same driver and the same section of tarmac!

Bring on the STIG

Rich

all these if's and but's pointless saying if the escort had the same power as there testing STANDARD cars, think yourself lucky they didn't go round the track that would have really shown how shit the cosworth is compared the the focus

So if some of you saw a clip of a race between an E30 M3 and an E92 M3, where the newer V8 engined model would completely ruin the E30 in a straight line... you would say that the E92 should be de-tuned to the same bhp level and then race the two again?!

Thats total madness. I can't quite understand how people can think that way, its like saying "yea, the Veyron smoked that Ford Ka, but if it had the same 69bhp then it'd be a different story". Completely irrelevant point of view.

On topic though, that video was good and definitely highlights the progress thats been made.. even saw how the Cossie bounced and floated over bumps on the road where the other two just absorbed it and stayed composed.

Cheers,
Grant

Not really fair IMO,they always use Fords slow standard press cars with old suspension and bushes, cars werent honed to perfection in the escorts day unlike the new stuff!

I knew this would get this sort of response from the Cossie boys.

Guys, honestly, how would it look if a 2009 car couldn't outperform a 1989 car? Same sort of hot hatch 20 years later, 20 years more technology yet you telling me you would still prefer the EsCos? How would Ford look then if a car they created 20 years ago could still outperform a car they created now?!

Test was 3 STANDARD cars as mentioned above as they come out the tin. Like all road tests of new cars, it is AS THEY COME, not with trick bits and pieces.

Fair point but the reality is that most escorts will be 330bhp with newer suspension/bushes and tyres which evens things up!

When evo group tested the Mcars they used a CSL with bigger brakes, different tyres and exhaust-simply because thats how most of them are!

The newer cars are better though, thats just the way it is.
