3 weeks of rs ownership and im fed up :'(
When i was younger i always wanted an rs turbo ever since i was like 9 years old.. now i finally have one and am paying rather a lot on insurance for an absolute dog got totally ripped off when buying it, it's got heaps of rust the gearbox is knackered and so was the suspension, engine is cutting out on boost and i dont know why.. bought the car for £900 spent over £400 on it and it's still a heap, im fed up and have lost interest now, going to scrap it and cut my losses wont be buying another rs unless it's a cosworth, which wont be for a few years..
Looks like i'll be going back to the frenchies....
Rant over lol

Break it mate.
And sorry but as has been said a £900 RST really is only going to be fit for breaking. Recover what you can by stripping it and find a good one and you will love it. There are still some good honest cars out there

Sorry but PMSL @ £900!!!
I spend that on tyres every 6 months!!!!
Any RST under £2k should be considered a restoration case I'm affraid.
A ball park figure for a good solid RST is £3K, with nice cars being around £5k upwards!

Nightmare mate but as said for the money your not going to get much. General rule is look at the average price of the cars are and if one is way under theres usually somthing suspect!

Well, put it this way.
I would expect almost EVERY RS Turbo to have wrong, if it hasn't already been properly repaired....
1. Rusty Battery Tray
2. Rusty Fuse Box Tray
3. Rust on the Wiper Motor section of the Bulkhead (not visible from above, need to look from inside the car)
4. Rusty roof in the Sunroof Cavity (Several rust spots behind sunroof)
5. Rust under the bodykit on the rear arches
etc. etc.
It's pretty gloomy I'm afraid. They are an old car now.
Alot are onto their second or third Battery tray by now and some have had new trays just welded over the top of old ones.
Most have been ragged senseless on engines that are old and worn and will have had second-hand suspension put on that was bought from Ebay.
Although EVERY RS Turbo owner will have managed to scrape together enough money for a Dump Valve and a K&N.
If you can find a good one, you've done well IMO. Expect to pay at least £2000 to get a good one and even then its not a guarantee. I hate to stereotype, but most of them are falling into the wrong hands.

engines and mechanics i could do all day, quote
so why you not have a good look at it in the first place?
for what it would cost you in buying an xr2 and then alot of work puting all the parts off an rs turbo (that sounds like it has some running problems anyway) your going to end up with two cars for the scrap yard on your drive!
better to break the rs and save up for a good one that will atleast give you some fun and hold some value

Tidy ones can be picked up for cheap money my mates just bought a very tidy standerd 90 spec G plate for a £800 without an MOT all it need was a set of wipers a few bulbs and set of discs and pads now got a 12 month ticket.
There good ones out there for cheap money but you got to know what your looking for
Or just reshell yours on to a diffrent shell can pick them up for almost nothing

Dont worry about it mate, it will all be fine once you have your cossie
All you need to do first is raise the 1200 quid you need to buy one with
sorry, couldnt resist.
Pisstaking aside though, next time, take someone along who knows what to look for.

mechanically the car is sound, apart from the gearbox which i managed to knock £300 off the asking price of £1200 car from the outside looks good, it's had a new battery tray, fuse box tray, front slam panel and cross member, new sill's just the rear chassis rails are rotten but you cant see it until it's up on a ramp, which i didnt have to hand when i bought it...

I think this is a bit unfair laughing at this guy's mistakes. Okay, he didn't know what he was looking at and you think, old car, shouldn't have to pay much for it. I must admit, when I started buying these sort of cars I bought so called 'bargains', and they never are, but then you can spend £5k as well and still get ripped off. But this is true for all cars, although the RS is an old car now, and there were a lot of rough old dogs years ago, it must be like Battersea these days!
Yes, I think you just have to chalk it down to experience mate, and as for a decent Mk2 XR2 shell, I think you'll struggle to find one of those as well, they've nearly all gone to the happy hunting ground now. They used to rot like an old bucket.
Best way when you're buying anything like this is to take someone with you who knows the car, or at least who will be impartial, because it's easy to fall in love with motors and just buy them on impulse.
Anyway, waffle over, I'm just going to go and polish my Fiat Mirafiori. (Now I am showing my age).

Chip's right there. I bet everyone has at some point, probably several times in fact. There's a lot more dogs than minters, so it's so easy to do.
I am so careful now it's untrue, I bet when I go and see a car people get their flasks and picnic tables out because they know they're in for a wait, but it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm not looking for perfection, because believe me unless you've got one hell of a lot of money to spend you won't get it, I just want a good honest car for my money.

I paid 4k dead for mine. It was all standard and solid as a rock. no rust on battery tray (original) not rust on arches. in fact cant find any.
but since i've had it i've had to have new front brakes and the rear drums rebuilt, need new exhaust, new shocks and springs.
so its a mini rolling resto and i paid good money for it. with rsts, go for the condition of the body, everything else can be sorted RELITIVELY cheaply.

could consider pulling at all apart and spend the next year or so removing every bit of rust on it and then a full respray, but i dont know weather she's really worth it, think it definatley were an impulse buy....

Rs's aint easy, especially trying to do them on a budget!
Ive had so mnay problems with mine just been really unlucky.
Sounds like you did ok if thats the spec and its had so many new panels etc...
Putting the lump in an XR2 is a good idea, cant beat them fun wise for the money
