Default FAO: Auto Electricians

What kind of qualifications do you guys have, and how did you get them?

There's a college in Leeds doing an evening course on it and I reckon it could be a potentially good business to start in Leeds.

Been looking for something car related I could do in the future and I reckon this would be a good career for me. I could really see myself setting something up in 12 months time if I could learn the right stuff.

Cheers for any info guys

Sorry but 12 months. To learn all about car electrics so you can set up a business.

Don't make me laugh. You'll be in for at least 3 years before you have anywhere near the required amount of knowledge IMO

my term was nearly 4 years mate, plus i think you relly need to work on vehicles day to day to learn most of your trade, i left about 6 months before my apprenticeship ended due to the money being crap

It all depends on what side you want to go into as well, very few of the lads at my place could do everything, some specialised in engine diagnostics, some general vehicle wiring etc others tachographs( not strictly auto sparkie but related). Plus alot of it can be general mechanics as well, changing alternators on some things involves the removal of lots of components etc.

I would say stay away if you plan on starting up on your own, but if you just want to learn the basics for your own use then go for it

ive been in the job for about 15 years now, qualified for everything under the sun in motortrade - if youve no previous experiance then i wouldnt bother as its got to be one of the hardest jobs about at the minute, theres technology in cars that NASA can only dream about pal, i am being serious tho, its a very very hard job is auto electrician to be up there with the best take lots and lots of cash, and if you were that good, then 90% of motor franchise dealers will pay you plenty of cash to have you on there team

I was only really thinking along the lines of installing A/V stuff, but alas it seems it was a bit of a silly idea.

Thanks anyway guys.
