BUT if you do lift off the Needle does swing straight around as Japcrap says

As Dom said they do swing all over the place, ive got a 323i petrol and you can get it to read 25+ MPG at over 100 mph.

At 130 you can get it to read over 50 mpg...
just lift off completely... the ECU shuts off fueling and heypresto!

This is very true, but it actually was doing that (according to the guage anyway!)
Did a nice 100 mile round trip cruising around 110 - 140 indicated and the digital readout reckoned 33.6mpg average!
