Have you tried or do you mean System Restore? :

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Can you do this through XP ? - surely windows would be wiped out by formatting - unless you've got the restore program files partitioned off somewhere?

you need to get a boot disk with DOS on it which has the format command in.
thats probably not very helpful but thats what you need

** saying that, XP will ask if you want to format when it reinstalls.

what you could do is make a dos boot disk, boot off it into DOS, rename the windows directory as something else then whack in your XP cd
