Default Plumbers.......... and Tiff - a hot water question!

Okay, got a problem in my brother's new flat.

The sink in the kitchen for some reason gives out the most piddly little stream of hot water, but all the other taps (bathroom and the en-suite) give out a reasonable flow of hot water.

System is typical new build (i.e. all electric) immersion tank in cupboard.

Recently fitted a new tap and nothing has changed, so I know it's not that.

What could be the cause of such poor pressure and flow at this one particular tap only? Blockage of some sort?

Tiff - you fit showers too? Might need a quote!

Rich

Is the pipework going to the tap very small in diameter????

Not especially.

The pipe work emerging from the wall is that funny plastic variety.

T's off to the washing machine next to the sink with brass stop valves on each pipe and up to the tap.

Cold out the kitchen sink tap runs like a good 'un.........

I asked as sometimes the taps use 10mm connection pipes and this can restrict the flow a little.

Are the stop taps fully open that feed the sink??

Is it a mixer tap set-up or single tap for hot and cold?

Tiff,

Stop taps are open fully, and I know everything is working fine as I swapped everything round the "wrong" way to eliminate everything from that point to the tap.

Single head with hot and cold feed directly to the tap.

Brian - I'd imagine it's a gravity fed system.

Right then Rich...Try this

You may have a slight air lock but this will get rid of it

Put the palm of you hand over the end of the tap spout.....HARD

Open the hot water tap fully and leave it open....with your hand over the end you wont get any water out.

THEN

Open the cold tap fully BUT be careful as if your palm isnt over it right you may get wet a little....

This will force the cold water back up through the hot and as it is mains pressure it will blow any airlocks away.

Let this run for 5 seconds or so.

Then shut off the HOT tap first then the cold.

BECAREFUL moving your hand away as a little water will spray out.

Then open the hot tap on full for a while and see how it is then

I see a problem with this.

Us humans only have 2 hands. So how can you open both taps whilst holding your palm over both outlets?!

So all plumbers have 3 hands? Is it a substitute for your cerebrum? most plumbers who come here seem to leave theirs at home!

does this work on mixer taps ?? because every so often my shower doesnt work

i think the shower pump draws in air when closing the bathroom tap for some reason, because ocasionally when turning off the mixer tap you hear the pump turn on for a second

putting one washer hose across both washing machine valves is the easiest way ,and less mess (only if you have two valves as most new washers only need cold water inlet ...so check first )

richard you say the system is a new style flat set up with an electric immersion ....how high off the floor is the hot water outlet (pipe)on your hot water storage tank (or cylinder )if it's only about 4 or 5 foot (ish)..your never going to get great water pressure as the system doesn't have enough head (height to create gravity fed pressure )it will always loose pressure on horizontal runs as well.... so how far away is the hot water storage ??
