do you just mean working abroad or on an oil rig?
in the states youll need permission to work and its costly to get that unless a company sponsor you.. i had a 3month permit to work in miami and cost my company a small fortune
when i worked in the cayman islands i had to fill out forms to say why i had to do the job and not someone living on the island and work again had to sponsor me for this

God where do you start.
I take you meant the good old North Sea Oil Rigs.
Companies are a bit reluctant to take on new-hires just now although they are screaming for people, thye usually take you on through an agency for 3 trips and if you do OK then you could be offered a contract.
So best bet is to find the agencies and get a CV into them, experience is not essential because there is a lack of new starts and most of the workforce are 10 year + veterans like myself.
2 weeks away is shite.
2 weeks at home is great.
The work assuming you start as a Roustabout is shite, your just a lower than the low dogs body basically, you have to listen to a lot of "safety" bullshit which is more preached than truly practised.
12 hour shift on a freezing pipedeck really sorts you out.
But if you can put up with the crap then it is a good career with decentish money and the 2 weeks off.
Where else do you see someone with no qualifications, no exam results making Ł40000+ after a few years and a few promotions.
I've been offshore for over 15 years and while i wouldn't recommend it as a career I certainly wouldn't say don't do it.
You have to be able to put up with a lot of bullshit and you will be expected to just shut up and get on with it.
Any more questions just PM me if you want.
Mike

I have 17 years on shore process experience and have just sent my cv off to offshore companies and agency's, I hope to move sometime this year.
mark, to be honest you will find it very difficult(tho not impossible) to get a job offshore with no experience and with more importantly no qualifications, C+G process plant operations part 1 at least is needed,(I have 1,2 and 3)
my cv is with petrofac at th moment but not heard anything
