right ok,

best thing id say to do is try using the brown green on pins 2+5 in the new box to see if you get a line, assuming the cable isnt cut or disconnected elsewhere in the house

try connectiing across 2+5 with the brown green and then the orange across 3, if it has a line and rings, bingo! if not try connecting the blue to 3 and see if that rings.

if you cant be bothered with that you can get one like that with a capacitor in and just connect the brown green.

this link may help..

http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/wiring_info.htm

speak to the place where you get the boxes from as they may be able to supply the tool to put the wires in the block otherwise use a screwdriver but be gentle otherwise you will snap the terminal

Right!!!

I connected the green to pin 2 and the brown to pin 5 then the orange to pin 3 and when you picked the handset up it just rang continously.

I then swapped the orange for the blue- nothing

I then tried green to pin 5 and brown to pin 2 and got nothing so connected the orange to pin 3 and it rang when the handset was lifted continuosly as before

All of these wires are solid wires BTW - not green/white orange/white etc.
Just all one colour.

I looked on that website- The original box that was there is a Genreal post office BT30 box as shown in this pic BUT is cream coloured not black
http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/images/BT30.jpg

The box we have to replace it is almost identicle to the one you posted a picture of with the numbers 1-6 in the same places.

What am I doing wrong?
(trying to be a BT engineer when clearily I am not?)

Cheers
Jake

ALSO PM'd ya Chris
