I'd feel safer heading to the nurburgring !!!Youre biggest risk is breaking a leg/arm or twisting a knee/ankle to be truthfull, although a number of people die every year crashing into tree's!!!!! But you wont see any tree's near beginners slopes,so dont worry .I'd say you'll love it and post back on here after the trip telling us how cool sking is.Best advice is get lessons when you go over,1000's of people try sking for the 1st time every year so the instructers are well used to complete novice's.Enjoy mate, regards Micky

I went skiing for the 1st time with my G/F and her family that all knew how to ski and had been skiing for years.
I booked a weeks worth of lessons for when i was out there. Was the best thing i ever did. You get brilliant instruction and the best guided tour of the best runs to ski on with your abilitys.
By the end of the week i found i could ski aswell (if not better ) than my G/F who had been sking for about 10yrs.
Only thing i found was if you not been skiing and your legs muscles are not conditioned to it your gonna struggle (i know i did ) and when you come back your gonna need another holiday to get over it
Seriously tho enjoy it and dont break anything

Yeah with a good instructor you will pick up the basics and be able to ski with your girlfriend in about 3 days (I did )
If I was going again, i would be working on my leg strenght before i go

I have been skiing since I was about 11, picked it up easily then with about 4 lessons on the dry slopes then I was fine for my first holiday on snow.
This year i've just switched to snowboarding and it was very hard at first. Never fallen over so much in my life

like anything when you crash, if you are relaxed you will be hurt less than if you are tense. and you will crash a few times.
also, it's easier to turn when you have a bit of speed.
but taking lessons is definitely the way forward. have fun

Better still, as said above, get some lessons on dry slope / snowdome, bit of a waste to spend money on a holiday if you are going to spend most of it on your arse trying to get to grips with skis/board.
Lastly, if you go to a gym, ask your trainer for ski specific work out, there's loads you can do to get your legs in shape (they do most of the work, especially thighs believe me).
Oh, and remember to pack some bath salts to releave tired muscles at the end of the day
We're going in Feb and I can't wait

I went last year, was my first time, I LOVED it
Took me about 3 days before I could parallel turn and stop, once you've mastered that, you can just go down all the pretty steep runs without any hassle, and it's awesome

I said morning lessons Frog, as thats when the snow is best for beginners to learn on.
Plus getting out and about at 7am, when you have a big hangover and being taught to Snowplough like your life depends on it is suppost to be fun.
I prefer blades to actual full length ski's, I think they are more controlable.

I used to go skiing 7 years in a row and an instructor for the first time is def a good idea.
Or get some lessons here on dry slopes but they arent really best for learning on compared to real snow, also if u fall on the dry slops it hurts alot more than real snow lol
Blades are good fun but when i had them some people in my group didnt like them. Not the best for a beginner tho as harder to stop from fast speeds lol

Blades are cool for a bit of fun yeah, great for going backwards down the mountain and doing silly things, not so easy with skis.
But I still prefer skis at the end of the day, blades aren't fast enough

The rest you can rent, I used to have my own pair of skis and that was a waste of money, unless you go on a very regular basis.
You could buy shoes if you really wanted to spend money, that way you will be sure your feet will be comfy and won't be relying on what the resort has to offer.

Been loads of times, peice of piss
Have a go on your local dry ski slope.
And when your there go to the learners piest and just try out what you learned on the dry slope, maybe get some lessons there for the first 2/3 days.
If your going as part of a group try getting yourself an actual instructor/guide to lead the group two three days (its quite cheap if there are a few of ya)
If you feel comfortable by the 3/4th day have a go.
But always stick to a group of 3 or more people

On the subject of learning, if you can ski on a dry slope, you will find the snow's a doddle
We'll be in Morzine + Avoriaz on the same week

Cool getting more hyper by the day - only 2 weeks away Hope they dont send me offshore inbetween as my minds in france now
Thinking 3 days of morning/afternoon lessons (am doing conditioning/circuit training etc just now to cope with wrecked legs a little better) then after that doing just morning lessons and going exploring with the girlfriend in the afternoon for rest of week
Cheers for all the encouragement - this is going to be V smart

TRY GET SOME LESSONS ON A DRY SKI SLOPE BEFORE YOU GO. IF YOU ARE ANYTHING LIKE MANAGING TO GO STOP AND TURN ON A DRY SKI SLOPE THE SNOW WILL BE A COMPLETE SKOOSH IN COMPARRISON, SNOW IS MUCH EASIER MORE FUN.
IV BEEN SKING QUITE A BIT AND IS GREAT FUN

Get a lesson and get insurance,i got back from france on sunday and all i saw each day was begineers in blood wagons. Buy a helmet aswell as no fookers care over there they will just knock you over.
Boarding is much more fun IMO if you get the choice
