Interesting reading smit cheers

While im here lol, whats the recomended mix for solvent basecoat 2:1?! as i was told by someone to use it 1:1?!

And whats the reccomended for the laquer 2:1 again?! and is it recomended to use 10% thinner like some?!

Work for McLaren Jez, amazing building to work in and a good bunch of lads in the paint shop (well bar a few cocks )

Bit repetative thou as its more of a production line than anything working on the SLRs, same panels same process and same colours all the time but in reality the work itself is fookin easy!!

No worries rads, the retail on Gti's is around £300
How the fook he sells em so cheap when their made over here in the UK and he'd have to import them 2 germany then sell them i'll never know

Ive just painted my shell. I fitted a new roofskin, new rearpanel, front panel, wings, scuttle, and front crossmember. I then had the shell gritblasted and etch-primed underneath. I then did all the preparation myself. All dents were DA'ed back to bare metal and filled. Whole shell was then DA'ed and scothbrited then I covered it in about 3 coats of 2-pack high build primer. This was then dry-flatted using freecut 320 and Mirka sanding pads with 3M guide coat. I basecoated it myself with DuPont Lotus Scandal Green and a friend whose bodyshop I am using put on the 2K lacquer. Pictures are a gun finish. It needs very little mopping in a couple of places due to a couple of dust particles that crept in.

As said previously all the work is in the preparation. It took me about 7 days work from 8am to 6PM to get it to a stage where it was good enough. If you're gonna do it yourself dont set a time limit when it has to be ready as you will end up cutting corners. Just keep going until your satisified. Just proves that it can be done by a non-professional to a high standard.

Also what sanding pads did u use after 320?! we use 400 discs then superfine pads or 1000abralon wet which gives a mint finish 2 paint on!! but the abralon pads aint cheap Always thought 320 was a bit harsh to use just before topcoating but guess if u used pads after then should be fine

Fair play 2 u thou, going back 2 bare metal is a fookin pain in the arse but results speak for themselfs as shown

At a guess smit, maybe something like a 500 cooler might be going there?!

It has a removeable s/s section that bolts in place. Its for easier access to the IC & rad.

Jesus this thread has escalated a little since I have been offline!!!

Nothing more needs to be said really... I will add I personally have never "trained" in paint spraying, I simply read books at the age of 14-15... tought myself....

This was the first car I sprayed (ICI 2k in erm 1997??) Even though I do say it myself it REALLY was the bollox, was as flat as glass... door shuts engine bay inside underneath the lot

Didnt have an oven and used a DeVilbiss JGA, which I still use to this day!!!

I have only done 3 or 4 full repaints

again I'm nnot a painter, but if you take your time and put your mind to it it can be done, though I will suggest there is a "knack" to it IMO,... Not just anyone can do it ..

I find you cant get enough paint for ALL jobs in the gravity guns.. though I do fancy a nice gravity GTI for basecoat, I usually just paint in high solids if single colour

I have got some lovely spot pots which go in the cup of the suction JGA too, they are the bollox, can put very little paint in them and very little wastage for smaller jobs!!

The JGA you posted a picture of is over 1 Ltr IIRC.. but the spot pots which fit inside are prob as little as 300ml, but the pickup is less than a centimetre from the bottom as opposed to the usual 2-3cm with the big pot..

Wouldnt you be better off using the gravity anyway?

Yeah the JGA is just over 1ltr

Wouldnt mind a gravity just for the sake of it, Only used one once or twice before...

i repaired, prepped and resprayed my whole car. normally at work i do whole sides, or rear or front ends but not whole cars, im chuffed to bits how it came out
