it's designed to remove the air from the water system, the air rises to the top of the swirl pot and returns to the header tank through that pipe, that's my understanding anyway

your right in a sense i think bud, i believe that air pockets build up in the system causing hot spots where there is no coolant just air so the air pockets are removed in the swirl pot therefore getting rid of the hotspots

And if there is no water coming up this pipe what does that mean
So let me get this straight , i should have water coming up this pipe from swirl pot to header tank

There will not be as much water coming through this pipe as turbo return. But there will be some.Have you just filled water as the thermostat may have not open yet and therefore no water is there yet.

A slight heat in water from turbo return

Thermostat aint opened yet then so probably no pressure to push water up pipe.Leave it tick over until hose on rad side of swirl pot is hot then look.

Keep an eye on temperature to make sure you aint got a airlock and turn heaters on full on hot inside car.Make sure it on flat surface as well.Is it a 4x4 or 2wd as on 4x4 there is a bleed screw on thermostat housing.

Is a 2wd stretch , my car always has a fair amount of pressure in it , but always thought it ways to do mostly with turbo return , as my mates have no return and not as much pressure , if that makes sense

you will get a mixture of both air and coolant mate its just not a straight return as from turbo just a release like an engine breather type effect, no straight current but if enough pressure applied it will come out

steady flow out of the return to the turbo but should only be air from the swirl pot...
the purpose of the swirl pot is to remove any air bubble from your coolant.
