I used to have AVG but it doesn't appear to be free anymore....they only offer a free 30 day trial.

Any links for this F-Secure?

I use Avast. http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I'd never heard of it before and was using AVG but had a few probs with it. This was recommended in a copy of Micro Mart a few months back and I can't fault it at all.

Tis free too which is a bonus

If you are running a legit copy of XP, use Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta version, I run that as well as AVG and Ad-Aware.

Same here, Avast is good. The updates are automatic, its easier to use than AVG and uses less memory. The big AV commercial enterprises could learn from this app.

Mind you, use a decent spyware/adware program as well. I paid for Webroot spy sweeper and my machine has been clean and running like a dream ever since.

Why do you have two scanners? Don't you get issues with one reporting the other as suspicious behaviour??

I tried this once, my machine never shut up alerting me. Drove me nuts.

I know what you mean about backups. My mate had an absolute ton of "vintage". Had a backup on another server. Took down his PC to rebuild it. finished it, powered it up, power spike ran through his power strip, melted his server power supply, lost his "vintage", email, docs, everything. He was gutted (mainly about the porn, it must be said!).

Now he buys mags as backups

You must have a fairly well specced PC because if you aint it must slow down your system having 2/3 AV systems constantly checking everything.

I use AVG Free Edition all day everyday for me....click here....

To be honest, it run's perfectly fine, no problems running games or anything. I schedule it to run scans at night, or during the day when I'm at work. Same with the spyware scans E-mail attachments take a little longer to come through as they are being scanned, but better to be safe then sorry IMO.

It's only an AMD 64 XP3200 running at 2.2 ghz with 3 gig ram

One anti virus program is ok for the home user that doesn't do much. Just general surfing and e-mail. The big downloaders need at least 2 firewalls and at least 2 anti virus programs.

I have been to many a customer and had cases where avg doesn't pick up a virus and norton does, and vice versa.

Whilst I admit thet AVG is a good program, you will never know how good until you get a virus And when it doesn't clean it, or cannot heal the file, where do you go ?

And if everyone in the IT Industry will tell me that Norton's is shite, what will they tell me to use ?

Our company use Sophos, we've never had a problem with it. We have an automated rollout and update solution and have never had a major outbreak that Sophos couldn't deal with. Can't be that shit.

So nobody ever got shit software from using Bittorrent?? You sure your a HUGE downloader??

I know its all down to personal choice, but seriously, Bittorrent has more than its fair share or crap. People will post any old garbage where they know plenty of users use the system. As for Sophos, again it all comes down to your own experience. I hated it when I first started using it, but I think that was more about learning the stuff. Now I think its as good as any other (except Norton, but to me, thats shit ).

Cheers

Matt

LOL - that makes me laugh, talking about reputable piracy sites.

I agree some sites are good, but on the face of it, uploaders can post anything they want. The sheer scale of the stuff means it can't all be checked for quality before users are suckered into downloading it, and not everyone is savvy enough to know what they are downloading until some bugger in Poland is writing naughty messages in Notepad on their screen

Cheers
