Well the idea is ok... after all it uses a knock sensor.

The question comes down to where you are going to mount the sensor & how your going to use this piece of kit!

Its like having a narrowband lambda meter on your dash - looks nice, but its not a profesional tool.

As i said on MSN mate, nice bit of kit for keeping an eye on your engine at a glance whilst driving, but for mapping i think you are better off with det cans.

Always had a question about these.

They are dialled in as standard to detect specific frequencies at which your block will ring when your engine experiences knock.

However..... surely different engines will ring at different frequencies?

As a mapping aid you would be mad to use one, But as a long tern Noise sensor then they are a good idea.

please do NOT take that as a dig, im well aware you were only trying to help, but the way it came across was that mark would recomend it for mapping when clearly (from his reply here) he doesnt.

Apparently Jay because i spun a shell due to oil starvation whilst arseing around with an engine i didnt build in the first place and couldnt give a toss about as it owed me nothing, it means im not allowed to comment.

Sorry

I personally have only ever used the home made workmans headphones jobs, so i cant give a relative appraisal, I like the basic homemade "mechanical" ones though for the simple reason that you get the real sound from the engine, not a representation of it.

But im sure a good quality electronic setup probably offers loads of advantages over just a naked ear, but having not used them i cant comment.

to my mind though, its only going to cost you a tenner or so to make a set, so give it a go, if it works out for you then thats cool, if you arent happy with what you hear and your ability to tune from it, then get an electronic setup instead and see if thats better.

Makes sense to go for the cheap option first if you might be trying both i reckon!

Interesting topic, and ive been meaning to buy one for my own car for about 2 years

The problem with the knock link and my personal advice is simple, i have never used one. However, i think it will do what it says on the tin with a bit of experimentation.

Detonation, when heard through metal tends to be in the regiong of 6 - 10 KHZ. Now, a knock sensor is tuned to listen to this area and the device attatched to it has to interpret the volume and sporacity of this noise and decide wether or not its knock.

The Knock link is simply making YOU the device that makes the decision. It appears to have what is essentially. an analogue graph of the 6-10khz volume range with the loudest part being a larger LED. So in theory, you will learn what is normal for your engine and then any sudden rise will signal detonation and warn you to call it a night or get your Gold Card out.

Those who comment the ecu has a knock sensor anyway, with all due respect im not sure on the relevance in all honesty. The average Ecu cannot retard enough to stop detonation in an engine running double its intended cylinder pressures, the std sustem was never intended to have to cope with such retardation, and even if it did, retarding the spark wont stop detonation that was due to a clogged fuel filter or morrisons 34ron unleaded

Hope this helps...

Hard one, some people cant hear det on teh electronic ones and some cant hear it on teh home made ones.....

I prefer the electronic ones for one simple reason....
Because we tune a lot of different cars, i find some pick up points are better than others for different engines, so i have the option to attatch 4 different pickups and swop between them on mine to filter out normal noise from knock...

I would say the normal type are best for the DIY enthusiast as:

There is, somewhere, a "How to build some" topic i recall, and if not, maybe there should be.
    Hope this helps.

    Jay,
Skip the trip to B&Q and head for your local hunting shop. The better quality your ear defenders are the better results you will get.

Go for some Peltor muffs. They may be Ł20 but you will struggle wth cheap Ł2.99 B&Q ones.

IMHO you have done it the right way round to sort the fuelling first

You will need to revisit it though probably after you have done the ignition, as it effects the way the engine breathes.

So keep a wideband in the car when you are doing the ignition.

Thats the way i would go about it to.

    Jay,

keep us updated how you get on. Sounds really interesting. Not many people on here have had a go at mapping their cossie. Hats off to yer.
Some screen shots of your maps, along with afrs you are running and engine specs would make a really good discussion topic.

Cossie P100s rock, as long as you do it properly and junk the cart springs.

Saw a blue one in a mag once , 350bhp ish, said he blew away smart arse in an M3 on his way to the track with his moto X bike strapped in the back.
    'king hero!

What management is your mate running?

That would indeed make a good topic.
