Would really appreciate it. A mate and his girl are buying a car and they've been told by the guy it has had a smash but they still haven't HPI'd it to check if it's been written off or not and I need to find out cause I can't let him buy blind even if it is his own ignorance!

Whots cat B my m8 went to slough to but a scooby (in red) and was'nt told any thing about it being on the hit list and when he check it came back as a cat B

 

Cat A and B shouldnt be allowed back onto public roads IIRC, i may be wrong like, sure someone will correct me if I am, Cat D aint too bad, mate sold his Cat D Golf TDI on an 02 plate recently for £7,200, lovely looking car

 

CAT ‘A’
A written-off vehicle that must be totally destroyed, including all of its parts.
CAT ‘B’
A written-off vehicle from which the spare parts may be re-sold, but from which the body-shell should be destroyed so that the vehicle cannot be returned to the road.
CAT ‘C’
A vehicle that is written-off by the insurers because the repair costs are greater than the value of the vehicle itself, but which can nonetheless still be potentially repaired to a roadworthy condition.
CAT ‘D’

CAT ‘X’

I heard a rumour at the local salvage auctions the other day that cat d cars now come off the register after about 2-3 years does anybody know if this is true, or is it just bollox im repairing a cat d golf gti atm.

 

what else do hpi checks show? do they show if it has outstanding finance on it? and what does hpi stand for?

 

yes a full one shows every penny owing and to who.

i bought a full one for current motor and got a full wallet with all hp documents.

it shows standard things like when the car was built, its colour, engine no, vin no, engine size,how many owners, when the last owner got it..

also if changes of plates have been done and when, outstanding finance and who the finance is with along with company contact details..

"hpi" is just the name of the company like "hoover", probably stands for something but now is just a commonly used phrase

Fourt so Bloody hell my m8 said the car was mint aswell could'nt find nothing wrong with it BUT when the report came back he turn away from it The car was a 1995 and was writhen off in 2000 so must have had a BIG HIT

Whoever that was needs reporting mate. Simple as.

There's not much lower than selling unsafe cars to people. When you do that you play with people's lives.... and not just the driver's.

 

cat 'b' cars can be put back on the road legally but the insurance company normally get shirty with the approved breaker/salvage yard that originally bought the vehicle which mostly leads to exclusion from buying such cars. The car would have been inspected by the police or vosa before a log book was issued.

 

i agree with what you say above but how do you know that a 'cat b' car is unsafe?

We have a Rover 75 at work that was categorised as a 'b', i have put up a pic below. It has n.s.f. door, sill & a lower a pillar damage and is now repaired and awaiting paint. It will be safe and i guarantee that you would not be able to tell the difference between this one and any other non damaged one, other than the price!

 

Ive never heard of cat 'B' cars being put back on the road and tbh at our local salvage auctions they put several axe holes in the roof's of the car so to make it harder for them to be repaired, cat 'B' cars are also referred to as spares only salvage.

I guess I stand corrected, but to be honest there are not many places I would trust to buy a Cat B car from.

 

My mate bought a crx vtec, when he came to sell it it turned out to be a cat b. That was a very straight car, all panels lined up nothing on the car that was out of the ordinary.

 

Sounds just like the scooby my m8 went and looded @ the bloke might not have even know any thing about it im not sure
