Default Carb Freeze - how to rid it?

Its the first winter i've been driving my mk3.5 Fiesta with a 1.1 HCS Carb'd engine and I seem to be suffering from carb freeze. Only mods are a bolt on k&N filter (and ive stupidly chucked the standard filter away )

Has anyone had the same problem? Any ideas how to solve it?

I used to have the same problem with a golf driver i had a few years back that i fitted a weber carb and k&n filter too, the only way to solve it really is to fit a hot air feed from the exhaust manifold or source a standard airbox and filter for the winter months.

That is teh problem.

The Best you can do is run some of that corrugated metal intake tube up from the exhaust manifold to the K&N to try and induce some heat into it...

Unlikely to help, the icing is happening as the extreme cold air this time of year is Induced into the engine, it can freeze the inlet tract partially. You need to warm up the AIR thats going into the carb.

Thing is i don't understand why the car runs fine for 20-30mins before totally shutting down - is it the case that it takes this amount of time for the ice to form? The car starts fine and runs fine from cold until suddenly no power and engine totally cuts out and won't start again.

Its strange though, the K&N seemed very hot, along with the inlet manifold - is it still possible that the inlet tract could freeze when everything else appaears to be warm?

Cheers for the advice so far

Yes. The carb tract itself is freezing with the freezing air flowing through it, thats why you must warm the actual AIR into the engine.

my xr2 tt does this on motorway runs,

the best way i found to clear it was to put my foot down for 15-20 seconds to build the charge temps up.

then it runs fine for a while.

i got the same problem on my 1.6s mother ran over the old filter , i got the water blocked of going through the manifold aswell, so it runs very cold, think hot air feed is the best idea mate. i'll have to get mine sorted out since it runs shit for the frist 10mins

Cheers - yeah been thinking of something along those lines, must make note to carry fire extinguisher if i do!

Still can't believe i chucked the standard filter away Since the car was apparently running fine (or so i thought).

just use some radiator, pipe and run it from the manifold (should fit over the neck) and run the other end to the K&N.

Thats the plan, although is it worth while blocking off the filter round the back so all the air is being sucked in from the area where the pipe is being directed to?

probally not mate u might upset the air flow, (its supposed to swirl as it goes through the carb) and it probally won't make much differnect just stick the pipe against the front u could always make a funnel or somthing to attach to the front of the filter to get the pipe over a larger distance. just be inventive. even if it doesn't look nice its only for 6 months when the cars covered in shit must of the time anyway.
