Good point, suppose the increments would have to be small so people were not put off by the price

The only reason I can think of is to meet a reserve if no one else is bidding

ive seen this alot on cars recently.

people putting them on at 99p. then some other person starts to bid like 10 minutes after its been listed, in Ł200 increments, up to Ł1500 so they are basically getting away with not starting it at a higher price, and saving loads

Kind of, item has no reserve.

Its something a friend of mine has been trying to buy a lot recently, and every time he is winning the auction at the end people keep pulling the item out of the auction cause it hasnt gone high enough.

Ie they arent putting a reserve on the auction but they have one in mind.

Item is worth about 4 grand, he is happy to pay that if he has to, but he keeps being the only bidder at 500 quid and none of the sellers seem to want to communicate off ebay.

So last night we bid one up to a couple of grand with furious bidding between us so that at least the guy will think that he is likely to get a decent price at the last minute as we bid against each other, so he might actually let the auction run its course.

Really fooks me off when people selling on ebay wont just put a reserve or starting price if there is a price below which they wont sell it!

In that context it's ok, it's if you're the seller, and sign in with your other account then keep bidding that e-bay get a bit sus at

Surely they are pulling the auction with more than 12 hours to go.....I thought you couldn't stop an auction once it was in the last 12 hours...

Quote off e-bay:-

Timing Matters
When there are 12 hours or fewer remaining and the item has a winning bid, including a reserve met bid, sellers may not make any changes to the listing, including:
ending the item early. Sellers may cancel bids, but not end the item
adding to or changing the item description
converting the item to pre-approved bidder
Canceling bids or making changes to a listing with bids when there are 12 hours or fewer remaining damages the buyer experience and can undermine trust in the marketplace.

I'd bid it up in the last 5 mins before the 12 hour limit....at least then you could report him to ebay....

I think one of them the guy did it by cancelling all bids within the last 12 hours so that no one bought it!
