How do I stop a heron getting my fish!!!!!!!
Well they not my fish, mum and dad went to Egypt yesterday, and I got to look after my dads fish 
(they are his pride and joy!!!).
Got up this morning opened the back door curtains and the fook off HUGE heron flew off
......so now im panicing, we have wire running around the pond, which is "supposed" to stop them getting at the fish, but Im not soo sure. 
Ive put a load of big plant pots around the edges of the pond pmsl but is there anything I can do, bar sit and wait for them all to disappear, and please dont sugest killing it, that would be impossible unless you shot it, which I cant dont have a sodding gun!!!!
any help would be sooo apprecaited, something ALWAYS goes wrong when my mum and dad go away, just hoping that this isnt going to be the thing that goes wrong

You need to put a net over the pond. Stops cats, herons or even neighbours trying to get the fish 
It'll only cost you a couple of Ł's from any DIY place.

not certain but i think if you put a plastic heron next to the pond it keeps the real ones away
Something to do with the fact they think its already being fished ?
Will check with my mother when we speak later - she is pretty good on such subjects as has a river boardering part of their garden

there are loads of ways to stop this the as mentioned already ways and also have no flat edges to the pond, they don't like standing on sharp rocks the same as we wouldn't in bare feet!!
a lad accross the road from me has a swimming pool sized koi pond in his back garden and he said it's heron proof and he has no net

Dragon sorry forgot to say we already have a net too it must be pritty hungry, as theres a massive lodge down the road, thats where it usually fishes!!!
Apparently they can push the net down, ive put a load of bricks on the edges of the net, and these plant pots too, just a bit worried incase it manages to push the net down, coz all the bloody bricks and shit will end up in the pond

put plenty of wire roun the edge of the pond 6 inches to a foot so the heron cant walk close to the pond..........if all fails borrow my cat she chases herons away from my pond.......fookin nutter my cat
and they won't push the net down cos they only stab at the fish to catch them

Fair enough then - looks like a plastic heron is in need
We have a plastic duck on our pond and two gnomes and we haven't had any grief from herons and we've taken the net off since then - didn't think of that

the youth aw right cool, although my dad will go mad if I put anything on his decking pmsl...so that one will have to wait till he gets back 
Chris - we already have the wire, its just over 6 inches, but its obviously not detterring the heron
My cat wont go out the house in the cold pmsl...so no chance of him scaring it away

Dragon I meant wil the plastic heron work fpmsl my dad would slap me if I put gnomes on his pond, my mum tried that one

We lost are big Ghost Koi the other year to a heron. We had him since he was about 4" long and was 10" when we lost him
Bamboo pole stuck in the ground round the perimeter of the pondwith string around them works as they land near the pond and then walk in to get to the edge. A net over the top is also a good method. We found the plastic heron worked quite well also

I have a pond & over a 100 fish & i would be sitting in the Lounge & watch 'Colin' the Heron ( Yep the Mrs gave him a name) pinch my fish sometimes three in a row, also had a King Fisher that did the same.
Bought myself a Heron Scarer which cost about Ł50 & squirts a jet of water at anything that breaks the beam. My Mrs getting caught when she goes to feed the fish is a positive side to this system , although ive been soaked myself.
Can recommend it cos it works, but does require a mains water supply a great little gadget.

Is excellent if you have a BBQ as well, aim it into the garden and watch people get very wet
It really is the best method of keeping herons away

fpmsl..my dad has actually got a huge gum lying about but I wouldnt have a fookin clue where he keeps it, plus, I really dont trust myself with one
