If you stick with the socket 754 motherboard I posted in that link then you're ok. If you go with something different, i.e socket 939 or different, it will need a new cpu.

You will need to re-install windows as well i'm afraid

So, you need to buy the board I posted, or one similar, and high power cpu, and reinstall windows

nope your 3200+ will be an old style socket

they dont make a motherboard with a PCI-express slot for that cpu usually

youwould be better off selling the graphics card (or giving it back)

and getting a AGP 6600 GT or 6800 GT/ultra

unless you want to start spending a lot

you will need a new power supply to run that graphics cards

good ones are £50 +

I will buy the 7800gtx off you tho :P

Yes it does say that! there were 5 in stock yesterday and now they have all sold out.

I did say near the start of this post that the AGP format has been discontinued so it's getting harder to find anyone with stock of AGP 6800GT's.

There are some available on ebay but they are already up to like £150 with 5 days left

you could buy a 6600GT like this (25 in stock) http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=85800 .I have this card and it will pay BF2 at high settings at 1024x768 but is not really good enough if you want to go higher res and play with full detail setting.

a 6800GT would be a better card to get if you can find one!!!

a 9800 will do you fine for BF2 manchester, i'd take up craig on his offer.

i run the same spec as you (but with 2GB of ram) and a 9800Pro 128mb card, and it runs BF2 fine in 1600x1200 medium detail (you dont need high detail, and even if you did you'd be pushing the 3200+) it only goes a BIT slow on artilery strikes, but since youre likely DEAD when that happens it dont matter... lol

I've just upgraded and had a right episode. My mother destroyed a hard disk, motherboard, and 256mb of ram by turning my pc off incorrectly despite me telling her what would happen

I then found that nobody is selling the old 32bit athlon boards now, and as I want to play the odd game or two on my machine I had to spend more than I'd originally budgetted for as I didn't want a sempron 64, I knew I'd be better spending the extra and getting a skt939 athlon 3200+ 64 instead. Still got 512mb of ram even tho i lost a stick.

I thought alright, spent a bit more than I planned but got a pretty damn good machine now.

Bought my gear at lunchtime then went back to work. While at work I came to the realisation this board had a PCI-E slot for the gfx card, and no AGP slot. My card was AGP!

Had to go back and shell out another £80 on a decent graphics card

Felt like 'd royally shafted myself, and there were no other boards with 3 ram slots so I couldn't just swap the board

Ended up spending £250 when I'd planned originally to spend about a ton

At least I got a good machine now lol.

I bought an Nvidia Geforce 6600, but not the GT version and it's great

Can anyone explain why i would need a new processor if i buy a Socket 754 motherboard with PCI slot?

The board i have now is Socket 754 but with an AGP graphics slot and my bro says all i need is the new motherboard and a bigger power unit to run the card (400w min)

DEFFO agree with craig, buy a PROPER psu. ive used cheap shite ones for years (i blow one up about every 6 months... lol) and finally got round to getting a proper one and its SOOOO much better.

and if you can get a mobo thats supports your chip AND has a pci-e slot then that would work.

i still think you should sell yours to craig, and take craigs 9800 as thats SO much better thana fx5200 its unreal! i really dont think you'll benefit THAT much from a topspec gfx card on your pc, you dont hav the other goodies to get the most out of it frankly.

also for BF2 i'd deffo reccomend 2GB of memory, the performance on mine with 1GB was quite poor, with 2GB its MUCH better. BF2 is the kinda game that eats up shedloads of memory!

anyway, do you really need a new PSU for a PCI-E mobo? surely as long as his psu's 300+ watts it should be ok? it's not like when P4 was released and you needed that extra crappy 4 poin square connector or anything

JIm, I've got a 300 watt psu and that struggled to power a geforce 6800 ultra card

That's the same brother that sold you a card you didn't need m8 ? No offence, but listen to what the "geeks" are saying

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...7883&GroupID=9

Seeing as you must use that site, I would say the above link PSU or higher.

You've paid good money for something you didn't need, and have to make a serious decision about where to go. If you don't want to listen to the people on this thread, then best of luck with your brothers advice, and let us know how long it lasts

Ive got a NVIDEA 6800GT and 2gig of ram with my P4 3.2GHZ that runs a 3DMark of 14000 and that power supply wouldnt last for more than a few hours playing unreal Tournament or Far Cry.

It talks the talk i agree, but you get what you pay for....

I just wanna get any upgrading out of the way now to save me doing it after xmas Ive added another 1gb of memory but i only have 2 slots, hopefully this new mobo will have 3 so i can make it upto 2.5gb in the future, my 160gb HDD is plenty enought for me and the 3200+ will do for now aswell.

No disrespect but your brother is not advising you the best here. He sells you a £300 graphic card and then recommends a £20 psu, its like having a 600bhp cossie engine built and using 4 green injectors. It just wont happen.

People seriously under estimate the benifits of a decent power supply. I payed alot of money for my 350w true power supply but it runs "that" 6800 card that Dan was talking about and his 340w power supply wouldnt. when i checked the specs of the 2 power supplys the more expensive one provided a 12A boost at the same voltage ranges on the power supplys.

So you get what you pay for IMO

My 600W Enermax set me back a fraction under £100, and it's worth every penny......powers the 6800GT, two hard-drives, two optical drives, as many USB devices as I want to plug in (except USB hard-drives, thanks to the motherboard - avoid VIA chipsets, at all costs - a 500GB firewire drive was fine, but plug a 40GB USB drive in and Windows decides it doesn't like running at all), a printer, etc etc...

Definitely don't skimp when it comes to power supplies...

Ok you have talked me into a decent power supply but i have just read this while doing some research into requirements.....

System Requirements

• Intel Pentium III (and above), AMD K7 (and above) or compatible with PCI Express slot
• Minimum 128MB of system memory
• Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
• Interactive Program guide requires Internet connection for listing updates
• Power supply of 400 (and up) watt is highly recommended for system stability

The bit that bothers me is in bold above! heres my bios:

Seem ok?

The AMD K7 chip was first released in 1999/2000, I think it's safe to say that the Athlon 64 chip dxdiag says you have would be grouped in the "and above" section, so would be fine!

Judging by the above dxdiag output, and the graphics card you've just bought, and my personal preference for Enermax (especially with AMD chips), I'd say the following would be a decent power-supply (since it also supports SLi, for future expansion, if you wanted to spend more money):
