I'd be looking second hand to be honest.
I bought a X800 Pro VIVO that soft mods to 16 pixel pipelines.
Its now recognised on my system as a X800 XT PE.
Paid 120 quid for the card.
Some of the 6800LE's mod to 16 pipes aswell. And will do GT speeds if overclocked.

the LEs are exactly the same card as the normal one, but they FAIL under testing so they restrict them to 8pp and sell em as cheap shit ones.
they CANT cope with 16pp!

Not that hard to do really, I'd say 45 mins to do the work, another 30 mins to reinstall windows, back online in an hour 30 for cash

Plenty lads on the overclockers forum have modded LE's. Some at 12 others at 16pp.
All benchmark and stress tested, and all have been fine.

What actually happens Jim is they are produced by the thousand on assembly runs and they randomly test runs for stability. If the one they test fails, they bin the WHOLE LINE.
Thats why some will work fine at full speed and others wont.
Same goes for processor designs... the whole run are designed and designated as top speed wafers but only the ones that pass the test flawlessly are badged up as the high speed retail units, the rest are downgraded and clock locked.

i know they do that with chips, but i remmber reading a press release from bvidia stating that they do not bin the entire line ona failure, they re-test the entire line

Mainly because the nobber at micrdirect picked the wrong motherboard from the warehouse, theres 2 types and mine is the smaller version, new PSU is in but cant do anymore until tomorrow night now
oh well, il just use the spare PC
