Default FAO Diesel experts...rough running '99 escort td

my stepdad is having a few probs with his 1.8 td, its running rREALLY rough, as if its missing. When he starts it after a day or 2 it chuffs out a huge cloud of black smoke, and its using more diesel he went to local Ford + they said fuel pump fooked, wanted over a grand

he went to a local garage, said it wasnt fuel pump, + try glow plugs first, + it maybe overfuelling...

what could it be?

My old one was a bit rough running and starting.

Found a pipe off on the air box.

Shoved it back on and went like a dream

By the sound of it you need a new one of these but for a Escort, although they are probably all the same.

Can you take a pic of the fuel pump ? Can show you something to check if so.

On some Escorts and Mondeo TDs of that age they have a cam actuator solenoid on the front of the pump. If that fails it makes them run rough and smoke.

It's a round part with a 27mm hex on it screwed into the pump on the front of it usually covered with a rubber cover and has two back wires going to it from the main fuel pump multi plug.

Easiest way to see if it's working is by listening to it when you put the key on pos 2 , it should tick rapidly for about a second, if not it's fecked.

Easy to change, just unscrew it and strip the multiplug out and pull the pins out of the multi plug after you've pulled the orange divider out of the plug. Can fit the two wires any way round it doesn't matter.

Get the new solenoid from any Lucas fuel service place/diesel shop Ł80.

Ford one is about Ł130.
