I have 1 question
If you are going to weld something like that why bother leaving small gaps between the welds at all? Why not weld in continuous???

Because that is proper seam welding Spadger me old china...

A continuous weld would make the shell too stiff and as a result brittle.

If you look in the bottom picture a few posts down you can see the whole underside of the car.

The top picture is the front of the floorpan on the drivers side where it meets the wheel arch etc.

This is a Grp4 Spec rally car so the idea is not to have anything that can get ripped off mid stage by rocks, zebras or natives....

SO.... skid plates are welded in to act a bit like a sump guard

When welding seams, for the reasons mentioned, you use a stitch weld....

The shell will be to stiff, And would be prone to crack due to stress, If you seam stitch it you'll have the flex and still the stiffness

Stitch welding also helps in the event of a crash. I helps to stop the damage going farther than necessary as it tends to absorb the impact between stitches. A seam weld once broken would continue to split all along the weld. Not explained very well I know but cant put it into the corect words
